There are pros and cons to this career. A good salary is definitely a major pro. However, one of the cons is the stress that comes from supervising line staff. I am a manager in charge of a division that serves the public in a government agency. Customer service is very important.
My advice to anyone going into a managerial position for a government agency, where you will be dealing with the public is this: "the customer is always right". You are there to serve the public and that should be your number one priority. The decisions you make must be for the good of the agency and for the betterment of the services you provide. It is quite difficult at times making decisions with regard to individivuals without losing sight of the big picture. It is important to always put things in perspective and focusing on what's best for the agency (or company) and for the people you are there to serve.
Daniel Webster, Abraham Lincoln, John Marshall and Stephen A. Douglas are among the most famous lawyers in American history, but none went to Law School.
