If you're the type of person who can articulate their words and handle upset customers over the telephone then this is the perfect career. I love what I do for a living and enjoy it everyday.
Being a telephone operator is a mentally exhausting job in the sense that you are dealing with many different people's attitudes and quirks. You need to have patience, and very good communication skills because all people communicate in different ways. The positive aspect is that you get to talk to people from all over the world and get different viewpoints. Also you are constantly improving your oral and written communication which helps you along in your own personal life. I would definitley choose this job again as a first time office job, although I am looking forward to the next step in my career!
In the 18th and 19th century, hatmakers used poisionous chemicals including mercury in their work. As result, many developed pathological symptons -- an estimated 10% went insane. Hence the term "mad as a hatter" and Lewis Carroll's character, the Mad Hatter.
