Radiologic Technology is a booming, enticing career that can open many avenues for specialization and varied job experiences. Healthcare careers have long term projection for low unemployment, above average wages, negotiable hours and good benefits. 2 years of schooling is typically required to begin a career as an entry level Radiologic Technologist (x-ray tech). Imagine you and your best friend both go off to school; you for Radiology and your friend for elementary education. 2 years later, you have graduated with an associate degree, have landed full-time employment with full life, health, dental, pension, paid vacation and sick time, as well as a schedule that you negotiated to work 7 days on and 7 days off. All this is located in the city where you have always dreamed of living. Your pay is 42K per year and you only spent 4K to get your degree. How awesome is that?!
Meanwhile, your dear friend is now on the 5 year plan which will cost her in excess of 50K at a State school, has student loans she can't bare to think about, and will only make an average of 32K a year when she is finally done. Note the disparity in time and money invested and the end result!
A year down the road you are now a seasoned xray tech. and your supervisor asks you to cross train as a Mammographer. They pay for your training and in 6 months you are now making 45K. Your friend is still in school . . .
Another year down the road your supervisor is so pleased with your work they cross train you to do Computed Tomography (CT). Look at that; your pay just went up again without it costing you any further tuition. Your friend is still in school. . .
Opportunities abound: you can go to school for your Bachelors with a minor in business and become an administrator. You could obtain training in ultrasound, nuclear medicine, or angiography and your employer offers tuition reimbursement, on-site training, flexible scheduling, and support, encouragement and mentors. You could step out of healthcare and go into industrial imaging. You may wish to travel the world and become a traveling technologist where the employer flys you to mutually agreed upon destinations, puts you up in an apartment, and you work and earn a pay check. This month, the US Virgin Islands or Hawaii, next month, Alaska or Texas. The possibilities are endless.
I have no regrets stepping into the Radiology field. I prefer clinic work with few evening hours and no weekends. I have been cross trained in mammography as well as laboratory and fill in as a medical assistant. My knowledge base and experience in the healthcare field is a great asset. With each new job description I can fill, my income only increases. Currently, I work less than 30 hours per week and net 42K per year. I have time for my family and a home on 5 acres of land. Xray is exactly where I belong and the field is wide open for new comers. |

Interesting Fact |
 |
|
 |
In the 18th and 19th century, hatmakers used poisionous chemicals including mercury in their work. As result, many developed pathological symptons -- an estimated 10% went insane. Hence the term "mad as a hatter" and Lewis Carroll's character, the Mad Hatter. |
