My work as a brand manager for a multinational food company is more than just thinking up of advertisements for our products. It is actually a holistic role that involves technical skills (product development - make it sweeter, revise the taste, change its packaging, etc), HR skills (managing people from sales, from the ad agency, from supply chain), supply chain skills (forecasting supply and demand, making sure that there will be enough stocks for the year), sales skills (thinking of new promotions and deals). It is like managing your own little business (your brands being your business). I would recommend this to people who would like to manage their own business someday and who are interested in learning different skills. |

(I couldn't find an exact fit for my career, this is the closest choice)
A career in product marketing can be very rewarding. My advice for anyone seeking a career in the field is to understand first whether you are a 'product person.' Do you enjoy thinking about how products are conceived and built, and how effectively they are presented to people who might find them useful and interesting? If so, look further. Great product marketing requires that you care about the conception, execution, delivery, and promotion of great products.
I would choose this career again in an instant. I love creating products and bringing them to market, and everything that entails.
Product marketing can require a number of different types of qualifications. These include excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to analyze and understand data effectively, domain expertise in the product area sufficient to understand how to connect customers with your company and its products, creativity, diplomatic skills, and the energy to sustain it all to the finish. |

I am glad that I chose a career in marketing. However, although the job can be fun it also requires a lot of time & commitment. You will be expected to put in long hours and constantly be thinking of new, creative ideas. This job is not for anyone who wants routine and security, as marketing people are quite often quick to be released if a company needs to cut costs. I am only 25, but have already been made redundant from a company (along with an entire department admittedly). When it goes well though, the rewards can be better than in many other careers, especially office based ones. Plus, if you come up with a good idea, you get the satisfaction of seeing it on TV, in a magazine etc which is cool. |
