To be precise, my job (or career) is difficult to fit among your categories. I am a career civil servant and over the past 35 years have held many and varied posts, ranging from that of a magistrate to head of various departments and secretary or the highest civil servant post. However, it is a frustrating career, since one is always subordinate to the political minister who has his own criteria for judging your performance. Merit is usually the last consideration. The rewards can be high but one has to be manipulative, constantly alert and be able to anticipate what the minister actually wants, and occasionally be able to persuade him to accept your point of view. Most of the time what the minister wants is not acceptable, and his motives are questionable. Sometimes one may be able to cultivate the chief minister and neutralize the minister, but chief ministers are often as dubious and corrupt as ministers. The civil servant is constantly walking a tightrope; very special skills and strong nerves are required. I do not consider myself as very successful, and if I had a second chance I certainly would opt for a different career. |

My career as a fund raiser for educational institutions is very rewarding.
My tips for people considering this career: volunteer for community organizations or the college you're attending. Look at college majors like Marketing, Communication studies, Business, or English. Be curious, and interested in learning new things. Be sure you have a passion for helping others.
I would recommend this career wholeheartedly, and would do it again. It is different nearly every day, I meet people with interesting jobs/careers and life experiences. I get to learn about the newest things going on, and share information about them.
Cons: the pay is lower than what friends who work in private industry earn. Part of the job is asking for money, which can be scary.
Pros: I have incredible mobility in terms of where I live; there are always jobs open in the field; and after paying dues for 5 or so years, I earn a really good living. The skills transfer to other arenas, so one can move between social service agencies, private schools, universities, hospitals, and community organizations.
People should know, first, that fundraising is actually a career, and that it is endlessly challenging, and highly rewarding. |

I am a project manager in the health insurance industry. If you are the type of person who likes to run things, is not afraid of confrontation, is a good communicator and negotiator, and extremely organized, then I would recommend this career path to you. The pros of this career path are that there is plenty of room for advancement, you can study and take the PMP (Project Management Professional) exam and be PMP-certified, and you can take this career into pretty much any industry. As far as the cons, depending on the type of organization you work for, you will have more or less authority in running the project. My company works under a functional-type organization, so the functional managers, and not the project managers, have the most authority. |
