Do you have any tips or advice for people considering this career? If you are considering management as a career, it always helps to have the doamin knowledge or the hands on experience of tha actual tasks that you will be managing. Although not essential, but it always gives you a upper edge.
Would you recommend this career? Definitely. Anbody with an acumen of management can and should consider making it their career.
If you had it to do over again, would you still choose to go into this career? Yes. I like this career and I am satisfied with what I am doing. Given a chance, I will do it again.
What are the pros and cons? You are responsible for your team's actions. There would be times when you get the credit of your teams performance and there would be times when you have to face the music on behalf of your team. You are always in the limelight and you are watched and followed by others. You need to be very careful about your words and your actions. Having said that, you also have the liberty to experiment, try out new things, and innovate.
What should people know about this career that they might not have heard about? Lot of people believe that Management is a science and if you know the concepts you can be a good manager. But, I feel management is a art, you can learn it by practising and you can always perform the same task through different ways. |

I work as a Depot Manager in the State Road Transport Organization. As an overall incharge of the SBU( Strategic Business Unit ) of a Public Transport Organisation, I will be incharge of Maintainance of vehicles, Scheduling of Vehicles, Booking of crew, Inventory Management, Monitoring of online operations, Personnel Mangement, Financial Management. This seems to be an overwhelming list of tasks, but, for each of the task there will be subordinate supervisory and working staff. If you are good at managing People, then this job will be a cake walk, but otherwise, its uphill climb, as most of your job involves instructing, motivating and communicating with men of different educational, social and cultural backgrounds |

Operations management can be challenging and interesting. If you like organization and are independently motivated, then you've got a good start. If you like challenges and are a good problem solver, this is a good fit. However, if you get bored with details and don't like office work, this is not a good fit.
Overall, the challenge of managing a variety of tasks and people is rewarding and feels productive. Watching the business grow and survive because of your efforts is a great feeling. However, depending on the company you work for, you could find yourself unrewarded and unfulfilled.
One big tip: negotiate for incentives. There's nothing like working hard and seeing all the ducks in a nice neat row, having a smooth operations flow, raising revenues for the company, and then not getting a piece. Don't leave this part unsaid for later! |
