If you dream of being a fine artist, you've got to develop three things- a thick skin, a good sense for promotion, and, of course, skills. The thick skin is necessary simply because no artist, no matter how talented, is going to be universally liked by everyone. You'll also have to know how to promote yourself and get your name and work out there in front of potential buyers/clients, because you'll have to fight for ever sale you make. That being said, a career in art is incredibly rewarding and engaging, and gives you more creative freedom than almost any other job and I know I wouldn't want to be anything else. If you have the skills and a strong belief in yourself, I'd recommend it. But this isn't a career you go into trying to get rich- you've got to become an artist because you love art and being creative. |

I am an illustrator. It is great, if you're good. If you're not, then it can be miserable. It is very competitive, people are rude, there are deadlines, and you usually end up working over time that you never get paid for. The advantages? Well any artist knows drawing and getting paid is still better than any other job out there. You’re getting paid to do, what you'd be doing for free anyway. I love it, but sometimes I'd like a break.
Tips? If you're going to do this, prepare to live poor.
I only recomend this job to people who have no other choice. If the drive is there, then it doesn't need to be recommended. A good illustrator is going to choose to be one, no matter what advice you give him/her.
If I had to do it over would I still choose to be one? Yes, only I'd worked a lot harder at it in highschool and studied it more before college. |

Don't do it for the money! You have to figure out what you really want to do, and do it, no matter what. If you are lucky enough to find your true calling, you must not turn your back on it. Art usually doesn't pay. You can make money by drawing and painting, but if you aren't making the art you really want to make, you may as well make your money some other, easier way. Some people can make art in their spare time, supposedly, but I've never seen it. I had to take the plunge and go full-time even though I had no idea how I would make any money. If you make something you really like, sooner or later somebody will want to buy it. |

For the past 3 years I have been sculpting and creating dolls. I specialize in fantasy creatures and beautiful dolls. I recommend this career to anyone who has an artistic flair and loves to use their hands. Sculpting is a very good medium for expressing emotions through creating artistically. I suggest that the new sculptor study anatomy, get books and tutorials on sculpting the human form, and review any media that can teach tips and tricks. Communication with others who sculpt dolls is a must. Sharing knowledge and techniques and encouraging each other is very helpful. If I had to do it all over again, I would have done this many, many years ago. Its very rewarding to me emotionally, mentally and physically, as well. When considering the pros and cons of doll sculpture, one of the most fullfilling aspects of this work, in my opinion, is the satisfaction of creating something from start to finish. Actually getting paid for that creation is almost a bonus. On the other hand, a con is that it can be frustrating if you get a block and cannot do something you "see" in your mind's eye. Something you should know about this career is that it's very difficult to do. People often don't realize how much work goes into each doll. From making the armature, then building up the clay, to making the form humanoid, then curing or baking the clay, is all quite time consuming. But you still have to paint it, then create the costume and dress the doll, finally put the wig or hair on the doll..lock by lock. Its a tedious and lengthy process. Unless you have good drive for this work and the passion to go with it, its not the career for you. |
