Be prepared for a life of obscurity. If you're going to be in the entertainment industry without being a Name, you're going to want to get used to, in essence, being a nonentity. The whole point of your job, more often than not, will be to stay in the background. There isn't even a category for Stagehand, Light Designer, Master Electrician... so basically, if that's a problem for you, you're really not cut out to be in the industry. |

More specifically, my career is that of a "Stagehand" - think stay at home "Roadie". Stagehands (or just 'hands') are responsible for providing the labor and muscle to help setup, operate and take down the equipment used in theatrical, music, sports, and other entertaiment events.
Much of the work is just hard, heavy work. Many people's first reaction to hearing what I do, is something like, "Cool - do you get to meet all the stars?" Well, the answer is both yes, and no.
Yes we get to meet a lot of interesting and famos people - sometimes they are both! However, we don't get to hang out with thme, we are just as busy as they are. In addition, we don't want to bother them, they have other things to worry about, and they certainly don't want to have to be concerned with whether the hands who are actually allowed to be "backstage" are going to turn out to be raving fans!
In fact, DON'T become a stagehand to meet famous people - the first time you run up to a singer/sports personality/actor screaming "I think you are so cool!" You WILL get fired.
Be prepared for hard, satisfying work, and the opportunity to specialise and move up to tehcnician, or designer positions within the industry. |
