Although I listed myself as a programmer, I work for a smaller Microsoft partner that provides a variety of programming/system analyst services. Being part of a smaller environment means that I am responsible for much more than just programming an application; typically I quote application designs, architect, design, program, and support applications of various sizes, ranging from a couple hundred lines of ASP.Net code to huge customized Sharepoint environments. On any given day, I may work on one project, or four projects, depending on customer demand, workload, what the other developers need, etc. In order to succeed in this field, one MUST enjoy what they do, and understand that 9-5 hours might not always be possible. I luckilly was raised in a computer-savvy family, and have always enjoyed working with computers, so this field was a natural fit for me. However, this job is not recommended for anyone, it requires a real technophile, with a strong business sense to succeed in this field. Some of the main pros of being a developer are the relatively high starting pay, the abilty to always "play" with new technology, and the skill sets that I am able to develop (which will make me much more marketable when I change companies). However, this job does require quite a bit of work outside of the normal 9-5 Monday-Friday range, and the constant flow of new technology can be overwhelming at times. If I had to do it all over again, I would choose this field again in a heartbeat if my career continues to progress as it has in the past several years. Although many people like to take the various certifications (MCAD, MCSD, MCSE, ect) that Microsoft offers, I have found that most of the times the exams may not be able to actively reflect real-world knowledge, so I recommend taking those certifications with a grain of salt. Overall, I highly recommend the field of Computer Programming to anyone who enjoys programming and learning new technology on an ongoing basis.
