I think that computer programming can be very fulfilling. The salary is great, even for entry-level people. And there is no manual labor, so that is good for some people. There are some difficulties though. As a programmer you work in a professional environment, and you work closely with other people all day. You must develop your interpersonal skills and learn to work with and get along with a variety of people from different backgrounds (Countries, Cultures, etc.).
I think if I had it to do over again, I would still pursue this career. But there is still something lacking in this career. Most programmers, including me, have yet to be a part of the next big computer/software product. The work can get to be a little bit less than spiritually fulfilling. That said, the pay should enable you to pursue other passions... |

First of all i'm sorry for my not very good english, but i'm spanish and my english level is not perfect.
This career is very funny but only if you really like logical problems in which you have to take an ordered sequence of steps to solve them. This career is really like a pastime. You have to exercise your mind continuously and if you are that kind of people who like thinking in logical problems, this is the best career you can choose. My advice is obvious: if you are not sure, don't choose it, because it'll be very hard for you. There are very much intelligent people with have failed in this career because they realize that they don't like logical problems until they have choosen this career. If you don't like this things and you only have in consideration the job you'll have after the career, don't take this career because it will be insuffrable for you with 100% of guarantee, and it's very probable you won't finish the career.
In my opinion the pros of this career are that there is many demand, and you will find job without problems after ending the career. In addition, if you are a good programmer you can earn a lot of money. The main contra is that if you are a medium-level programmer you can change frequently your job, because there are many enterprises which contract people who know many things about programming, but they don't have career. So, enterprises pay less money for the same job and it is really a job that must correspond to graduated people. This occurs very often in this career and it is the main problem in my opinion.
In any case I recommend this career, of course, but only to people that really like use the mind. (People who do many sudokus, or play chess or things like that, used to be very good programmers).
Finally, if I were younger, I'd choose this career again, but only because I like it a lot. (I have programmed since I was a child)

I love my career, and I wouldn't change it for any other career because it let me know many aspects of business. I recommend this career if you LOVE computers, and are able to be in front of a computer for hours, and keep thinking on how to solve a problem even on your non-working hours. The pros are the it is a very rewarding and very solicited career because almost everybody , personal or business, need a computer and someone to program it. The only CON that I see on this career is that people expect from you to know EVERYTHING ON COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE, and sometimes they do not realize that they need to give you all the feedback to develop a software for their company. Ex. they give you a printed invoice and a report based on those invoices, and later, they tell you that some information is missing because it appears ONLY on the screen, or it is known by the data entry person HOW WILL THEY ASSUME FOR YOU TO KNOW HOW THEY RUN THEIR BUSINESS THE FIRST TIME.
I highly recommend this career even though that I have had many sleepless nights :) |
