  Mathematics, General:

Mathematics brings together topics from so many interesting fields: chemistry, biology, computer science, psychology, business, you name it. Don't confuse interest in a variety of these topics with a desire to pursue mathematics, however. It's so tempting when studying a related topic brings you within just a few classes of a math major. Once you get beyond the required coursework, advanced mathematics relies heavily on abstract theory and has little application to the real world. Love math but don't want to pursue teaching? Redirect your interest to a more specific field. Actuarial science, accounting, and engineering are better choices for a marketable degree.

  Mathematics, General:

I'd advise anyone considering having math as a major to specialize in a certain area of mathemeatics instead of being general(like I was). In addition, they should be aware of what types of careers would utilize their math skills and tailor their mathematic and elective courses to fit this.

For instance, I thought I wanted to be an actuary - however, I never researched the job - I'm a talker, and most beginning actuaries sit at desks all day with little interaction This obviously would not have been a good fit. I did in turn become a market research analyst and used my statistics for that.

I would still have math as degree. There are lots of opportunities with this major(teaching, research, statistics, market research, actuarial science, and more). I wish I had made my electives more tailored to my job.

The biggest con at my school, is that many of the teachers were difficult to understand (from a language/accent perspective) and we always had Friday classes.

  Applied Mathematics:

If you are determined to be an Actuary, this is the field for you. Otherwise, you need at least a master's degree to be taken seriously in the real world. Also, learn as much as you can about programming. You will at least have a practical skill that will garner some interest from employers.

If you are interested in majoring in mathematics, you MUST determine what you want to do with it early on. Simple mathematics degrees won't help you find a job, unless you go on to study for a graduate degree. However, if you go towards the actuarial, educational, or applied mathematics degrees, you should be able to find a job relatively easy, especially if you're willing to move.

A general mathematics major is not an easy major, however, I find the hard work to be rewarding. There are not many aspects of life that are not touched by mathematics and thus there are always careers available. If you are good with math and are willing to dedicate time every night in order to keep up with it, general mathematics is a good major for you.

  Mathematical Statistics and Probability:

I dropped out of this major the first time that I went to school and I regretted it every day since. I choose an easy major and 9 years later found that I was overworked and underpaid for that degree. Mathmatics and statistics is challenging but rewarding. There is a good job market for this major as it can be applied to many different fields. I wish that I would have stayed the course and received this degree the first time around as I would be 9 years ahead in my career.

I loved this major. I would recommend this major to anyone who loves math. The best part of this major was being able to study a subject that I love. The downside is that it can be difficult to find a job.

  Mathematical Statistics and Probability:

I am an actuarial science major. I would highly recommend this major for anyone with an aptitude for math and problem solving. Actuarial work requires high degree of technical and analytical aptitude, and there is all kinds of work to provide different kinds of challenges every day.

  Applied Mathematics:

if you are a student that likes to problem solve more than figure out how things come about you should become a statistics major. I for one like doing problem solving and wish i had gone a different the other route earlier. mathematics to me seems to be more of a learn how things come about. i really am not that kind of person. the work in math compared to statistics is about 40-50 hours for math and about 30-40 hours for statistics.

  Mathematics, General:

Math is a great major because it really sharpens your logic and reasoning skills, which will help you in any career. In addition, potential employers are generally impressed since math requires real work and the ability to apply yourself to get good grades. I would choose this major again in a minute. The pros are that folks think you are a "brain", employers are impressed (helping you get in the door), and it does develop your reasoning powers. Cons are that it is harder than other majors, requires more work and study, and it can be a bit dry at times (wonderful at other times, though).

If I could do it again I probably would not major in mathematics. Other than teaching the field is pretty limited. Once I decided teaching probably wasn't for me my degrees were almost useless. I wish I had followed my heart rather than simply majoring in what I was good at.

  Mathematics, General:

I studied math at a small liberal arts school, in a department of 7 professors and about 30 students. I found the subject to be rewarding and intellectually challenging, and the atmosphere was friendly and collaborative. You are surrounded by lots of interesting and intelligent people. Fellow students and profs were always willing to help each other understand difficult concepts. My experience was very positive, however a math degree is not for everyone. You have to be able to enjoy working on very abstract problems for a long time. If you are considering a math major, I have some advice: remember that no matter how smart you are, someone else is better than you at something. Math is a team sport. Everyone ``stands on the shoulders of giants'', as Isaac Newton put it. Also, I highly recommend that prospective math majors learn how to use LaTeX; it will make your writing much nicer. I will graduate in 4 months and am on my way to grad school. Majoring in math made my career decision easy; I enjoyed it so much I decided to become a researcher and professor.

Mathematics was the best major for me. I does lack of the some opportunity for artistic creativity if you aren't in certain specializations within mathematics such as topology, knot theory and other spacial geometric fields. But it really has opporunities to make discoveries in every field and open so many doors. I loved the challenge and that everyone could make original proofs and really push forward in one area of mathematics. Nothing is really finished already and there is so much more to explore and I know that if I don't want to keep teaching that I can go into so many other careers with a degree in mathematics such as working in insurance or finance or various science careers and the government has tried to hire me more than once before for a pretty penny. For now, teaching is quite fulfilling.

Math is a language that people pay you to understand and speak! No matter what business or industry, large or small, those with good math skills make better decisions, have a better understanding of information, and make more money than those without those skills. A math major with an MBA is a fierce financial expert, an art or music major with a double in math has functional skills to pay the bills while developing their artistic career. Math adds skills to turn a technical writer into a valuable tool for translating legal matter or economic matters to a lay audience.
