Women's Studies:

Women Studies is a fantastic major that really opens up your eyes to the world around you! It makes you more aware of life and the heterosexism that can happen around you!

Near and Middle Eastern Studies:

I loved this major! It provides a great background for understanding the Middle East. Yes, its complex. Yes, the languages are tough. But it was incredibly rewarding, and so relevant considering current events. I think my favorite part of the major was the language study, and of course studying abroad to practice the language! I think that the best part of having a degree in Middle Eastern studies is the cross cultural understanding you have after you finish. This is really helpful in the 'real world', working with people from the Middle East, or even understanding world events or politics.

Women's Studies:

This was a very limited selection when I first began my degree. But after I spent a few semesters in it, the selection broadened tremendously. I specifically loved the historical part, it gave me so much insight into the past of women and how and why women are treated today. This degree has become so closely intertwined into my life it is difficult to say where it begins and ends. Besides I am always armed with some fantastic fact about women no matter what the context of the conversation.

American / United States Studies / Civilization:

This was a great major because it is interdisciplinary. I was able to take classes in many different subjects that really taught me a lot about how people think and how that has affected the American culture. In addition to standard American studies classes in history, political science, and literature, I took journalism, sociology, music and art classes that all contributed to my completion of the major. It was such a wide and varied selection of courses--I was never bored by discussing the same topics over and over. Even now, although my major has not been "useful" in the two years since I graduated--useful in the sense that I'm not working in a museum, for example--I definitely would choose to major in American studies again. Not many majors give you such a wide view of the changing culture that, forgive the cliche, has shaped our nation and it's people into what we are today. It's fascinating.

Western European Studies:

My college called this major "Humanities" and it spanned literature, history, art, science, economics, architecture, etc. It gave me an overall understanding of Western European culture, and how it has created our society today.

I went on to do graduate work (English major) and this was a great foundation for understanding the context of the British literature I studied. I don't think this major would have gotten me a great job straight out of school, but as a foundation for further study, it was wonderful! I would do it again in a heart beat.

Hispanic-American, Puerto Rican, and Mexican-American / Chicano Studies:

I've always loved both the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. The history is rich and diverse, filled with peoples and lands that have gone through centuries of change and development. I tried major after major in the sciences, thinking that a technical education would be more beneficial to me in the long run. But in the end, I had to go with my passions. If I had it to do it all over again, I would have pursued my education in Hispanic Studies much sooner than I did.

American / United States Studies / Civilization:

American Studies is not an end, you need to get further degrees if you want to make any money. You'll need ateaching credential, a graduate degree, or something else to really make a career. But American Studies offers the best of many disciplines (Art History, History, Lit, Sociology) and was a really fun major to have. I had a blast and loved almost every course I took toward my degree. If I had to choose again, I don't know what I'd do. I loved the major, it just didn't prepare me for the work world.
