Biotechnology:

Biology is a very interesting subject and it is very enjoyable. One gains a better understanding about their environment and mechanisms in place for natural survival. Biotechnology is awesome because it is practical in our everyday life e.g. baking bread or brewing beer. I would definitely do this major again because i have had the time of my life, it never felt like a course, it felt more like a hobby. It experienments and practicals are enriching and allows one to gain a closer perspective of biotechnology. However this major requires a personal interest in the subject and the determination to achieve full potential. Hence it is only viable if one is deeply determined to succeed.

Biochemistry:

This major is a practical major for those considering careers in the medical field. I found it to be very satisfying and helpful in developing a career as a molecular biologist. I chose the major because I was going to pursue a career as a pharmacist, and I would choose it again if I had it to do over. It gives a great overview of both biology and chemistry. The down side is that it doesn't go into as much detail as a chemistry or biology major would.

Biology / Biological Sciences, General:

While this degree is very useful and interesting, I would have probably double-majored if I had another chance. Biology is rather narrow and doesn't really teach a person how to think objectively (i.e. not good for people who want to be well-rounded).

Biology / Biological Sciences, General:

If students wish to teach biology or become a researcher, I suggest they either substitute teach/try being a teacher's aide or do a summer research internship ASAP because the academic work alone won't help you decide if you're going to "use" this major in the future. There's a 50/50 chance that I would still major in biology compared to chemistry or mathematics if I had to do it over again. The "pro" of the major is that it mixes hard science with more qualitative stuff and biotechnology / pharmacology can be a big, exciting field. The "con" is if you discover you don't want to teach high school or become a lab rat - there's not much else to do besides go on get a Ph.D. or go into sales/management.

Cell / Cellular and Molecular Biology:

Cell and molecular biology was one of two of my majors, and I wouldn't recommend it as part of a double major - if you're going to focus on biology, you need to do it all the way. If I had to do it all over again, I would have focused on one major (probably my other major,) and devoted all of my resources to it.

If I chose biology, I would strongly recommend getting into research as early as possible, and fostering relationships with professors so you can work in their labs. Depending on the university, the requirements for a biology degree may either be extremely strict and limiting, or very open to individualization. I would recommend considering that when applying to colleges and universities.

All in all, I would say that biology is great for those who thoroughly enjoy it, but some parts of the degree (especially organic chemistry) can be a nightmare, and they just keep recurring.

If you are serious about the science, make sure to get involved in an undergraduate research project. Classroom instruction alone does not make a good scientist.

Microbiological Sciences and Immunology, Other:

Have a cold hard look at the sort of jobs available to people who major in Microbiology or Bacteriology. They're few and far between. You'd be better off doing Medical Laboratory Science or Molecular Biology. I would not do this degree again, although I love my work. The job opportunities are too small. The pros are that it is interesting, varied and you can feel as though your work is actually helping humanity. The cons are the lack of jobs, the low pay (similar for all science jobs).
