Film / Cinema Studies:
First, I would not trade what I do for anything... well maybe 10 million dollars. I am a makeup artist in the Film Industry. I went to USC school of cinema before it was the School of Cinematic Arts! If you want to get into the film industry to do photography or direct, yes I would suggest going to school and getting a major for that. It is important to understand the technical aspects of those parts of film making. I went for production management where I was to learn how to produce and manage films. Unfortunately or fortunately for me, I found that people were paying me to take over an unknown, left out part of film making "make-up" so I took over that area. I monopolized it and actually used those management skills to take over. It was wonderful. Now USC did teach me some of those skills but you can learn them at colleges that are far less expensive! The only reason I went to USC was for the networking opportunities and the ablility to put it on my resume. Yes it has helped me in the tough times, but all in all, I do it all on my own. I would definately do it again, as I never felt as good as I did about my self, and my mind as when I was at USC. I would definately do this major again. But I would suggest to others trying to get into film... dont let a huge school take all your money just because they have a name. Film is all the same no matter where you learn it. And sometimes, its better to just JUMP IN rather than go to school. Grips, ADs, Makeup, Wardrobe, those are all areas that if you jump in and read books and learn on your own you can do. Of course a few classes at a trade school or community college will always help. |
