  Fine / Studio Arts, General:

One of the benefits of being a studio art major was the ability to develop critical thinking skills while working independently on creative projects. I learned a great deal about problem solving, networking, and time management through this major. I would highly recommend studying studio art to anyone who has an interest in the making of art work, and in contemporary artists. However, for individuals mainly interested in the history or theory of art, I would recommend pursuing an art history intensive course of study. Having a degree in studio art has had a number of benefits. It has allowed me to gain employment in a variety of fields, including corporate graphic design, retail display design, and non-profit organizations. The downside to having this degree is that many people assume it was a "soft" degree, providing very few skills necessary to work in the "real world." This is not true, but it is a prejudice that you encounter when you present a degree in studio art.

While a degree in Art was just what I was looking for, the general nature of my degree did not allow for me to easily slip into the workplace. Because I went to a liberal arts college there wasn't as much of an emphasis on the technical aspects of applied arts to commerce. While I did secure a job as a pre-production artist in awards and garments shop I would have been better served to have received some on the job training through an internship. Or perhaps several internships would have been in order, so that I could better experience how my studies translated to the workplace. I wholeheartedly agree with people getting their degrees, but there is no better teacher than the workplace!

Photography as a major. If I had the choice I would not have done this again as I find the career market is lacking. Finding jobs in the competitive and small world for photography can be a challenge.

  Art History, Criticism and Conservation:

I had a great time studying art history -- really enlarged my view of the world and the way we express ourselves within it -- but -- unless you choose to pursue an advanced degree, there isn't too much you can do with it in the real world. So, if you're independently wealthy, go ahead and indulge yourself. Otherwise, be practical, and major in something else.

Although there's a lot of work involved in being a photography major, I would definitely recommend studying this. You learn a lot, not just about how to take photos, but how to see the world around you differently. I loved this major and would definitely take it over again. Some of the perks of this major are being able to pick from different types of photography work from photojournalism to fashion photography. Also, the ability to freelance is a plus.

  Art History, Criticism and Conservation:

overall, i enjoy being an art history major. the cons are that it is very detail-oriented, so if you're not good with memorizing dates & things like that, you'll probably be miserable as an art history major. it's also not a very "useful" major as there's not alot of jobs that it leads to, and liberal arts degrees in general are becoming more & more worthless. but it's a very interesting field of study, particularly if you can orient your mjaor toward a specific area of study that you're interested in, such as contemporary art.
