Physical and Theoretical Chemistry:
I have developed a growing love for chemistry. I had no idea how much I would learn outside of chemistry and not just about chemistry specifically, but how I have found interesting analogies between chemistry and life in general. How the uncertainty principle, though directed toward atomic theory, is very much a part of our inability to never really be sure of anything, that it's all uncertainly and relatively explained due to our lack of ability to measure anything perfectly, without error as we have little understanding of what infinity is. Perfect measurements require infinitely sensitive precision, but how can we do that. Everything is really just a theory as we will are uncertainly uncertain. I don't really care about the job factor anymore, but quantum mechanics has got me good, giving me a enjoyment for my previously hated calculus and physics. |

Chemistry, General:
I entered college knowing I wanted to major in one of the sciences, but couldn't decide between biology, chemistry, and physics. After taking the introductory classes for all three, I knew chemistry was the perfect choice for me. Logical, elegant, and fundamental, chemistry is more practical than pure mathematics, but doesn't involve the rote memorization of biology. Chemistry teaches you the why and the how, and then lets you apply those principles to whatever problem you need to address.
I do not regret choosing this major, but I do wish I'd taken more advantage of my liberal arts college by diversifying and attending more courses in the humanities. All the scientific knowledge in the world is useless unless you can communicate with others (this is why English and writing courses are critical for science majors); scientific knowledge doesn't do a bit of good without a frame of reference (history, sociology, and philosophy will give you that framework).
A chemistry degree, like any other natural science degree, is essential for a career in medicine, the research laboratory, or to pursue an advanced science degree. My career opportunities were numerous; I happened to stumble upon forensics and have been at it for eight years now. |

Analytical Chemistry:
With any science major, be ready to work hard -- you're not going to be out partying with the English, History, and PE majors.
Would I recommend studying Analytical Chemistry? If you love working in the lab, yes! If you would rather be at a desk -- no. If you want to make a lot of money -- double no. Although I love it, I don't know if I would major in it again knowing what I know now. I haven't made a lot of money, and I've had 3 laboratories close resulting in periods of unemployment lasting 4 weeks to 1 year. If you have the ability, Organic Chemistry offers more opportunities and job stability. Unfortunately I'm a terrible Organic Chemist, so that's not an option.
The pros of this career are that, if you can find them, environmental positions get you out of the lab and outside collecting samples so you're not locked in a building all day long. Of course this can also be a con when it's 90 - 100 degrees out with corresponding humidity or if it's -10 with a brisk 20mph wind blowing out of the North. Another pro is all the cool toys Analytical Chemists get to play with! GC's, HPCL's, Raman Spectroscopy... Nirvana to a science geek. The cons -- you may be testing sewage with all the cool toys.
I suggest trying to get a summer internship in an environmental or construction materials lab during high school or after your freshman year of college to see if this is something you want to pursue before you make the substantial time and financial investment a degree in the sciences requires. |

Chemistry, General:
Chemistry is a worthwhile, vast, and labor-intensive field of study; I recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed their previous exposure to the subject and doesn't mind spending a lot of their college days reading textbooks and working in the lab. If possible, I recommend that undergraduates prepare themselves for multiple career possibilities. It is tempting to decide that, "I'm going to be a teacher" or "I'm going to work in industry" without considering how that decision might limit your career options later on. Even if you absolutely love lab work, you will still survive taking a few education classes. Many, many chemistry majors spend portions of their career teaching and portions of it working in industry. Straight out of school, you may find it easier to get a job teaching than any other chemistry job, but this very much depends on the location where you are seeking work. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the local chemical industry wherever you are going to school; many internships are available for college chemistry majors, and they can provide a better source of income than you might expect as well as invaluable experience.
For me, chemistry was a wonderful major. I have no regrets about my choice, and envision myself both studying and doing chemistry for the rest of my life! |
