  Russian Language and Literature:

If I could do it again, I would. Studying Russian opened up so many opportunities in my life. After graduating, I got the opportunity to teach English abroad in Russia and nothing in my life could compare with such a cultural and rewarding experience. I would highly recommend studying Russian if you have a passion for Russian traditions for slavic linguistics. I cannot think of any cons. I have found this major to be extremely useful in my life working as an interpretor.

  Japanese Language and Literature:

This major can be great if you will be going into a career that requires a knowledge of the language/literature and culture, but it may not help very much in the professional sense, otherwise. If I could change my major, I would - to something a little less specialized, or more applicable to a range of career options - and studied Japanese on the side, or as a minor. I think a language makes a great minor, as a support skill for another major with a broader field.

  Italian Language and Literature:

It was fun to study and a wonderful feeling to become proficient in another language and get a real inside look at another culture, but it's useless in preparation for real life. I finished college with no idea what to do with myself. I would only recommend this major to someone who knew they wanted, for instance, to work with an Italian import/export firm, or to sing opera, etc.

  French Language and Literature:

I loved studying French and would definitely do it over again, as long as you understand that a job directly in that field is rather limited and you will come out basically as a general liberal arts major to employers. I didn't spend a full year abroad and would very strongly recommend doing so to increase fluency. By focusing on a foreign culture you gain a lot of perspective on your own which is very valuable in today's multicultural world.

  Spanish Language and Literature:

If you are going to major Spanish or any foreign language, make sure that you love it first. You will be doing a lot of reading, writing, talking and travelling, and so it's important that you enjoy the language, or it could work a number on your psyche.

You should also consider what kind of job you would like to have when you graduate. There is not always a lot you can do with a B.A. in Spanish, but it is a solid degree that will get you in the door of any number of companies, and speaking a foreign language is always a bonus on resumes.

I would only recommend studying Spanish if you personally love it, not for a specific career. I would still choose this major, though, because it has been an important part of my development as a person.

The biggest con of this major is that you either have to go on to a higher degree or have some other major or interest that you can look for work in. If you have a double major, Spanish is the bonus, not the bread & butter.

The best part of studying Spanish is that you learn to communicate with a large portion of the people of the world.
