Mechanical Engineering:
If you are considering Mechanical Engineering, be prepared to work hard. Mechanical engineering is a great engineering degree if you want to get a "general" engineering education. You will study thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, and statics and dynamics alongside civil and architechtural engineering majors. You will study more fluid mechanics and dynamics than these other majors, however. You will also get a solid base in electrical circuits and programming, but not as deep an education in these subjects as an electrical engineer or computer scientist will. With a mechanical engineering degree, you can work in a variety of fields -- power plant design, automotive engineering, engineering consultation, just to name a few. While mechanical engineering is a great engineering base, to specialize in any one aspect of it, you will need to get a higher degree than a bachelor's of science. For example, I am interested in energy and power plant design, so I am getting a Master's of Science in Sustainable Engineering in Energy systems. If I was a senior in high school, and I had to choose again, I would still pick Mechanical Engineering as an undergraduate degree. I would have taken longer to complete it, however, and I would have taken more electives that had nothing to do with my major. |

Computer Software Engineering:
I had a wonderful experience getting my BS in Computer Science. As part of the college of engineering, I took a large number of general engineering classes (statics, dynamics, physics, calculus, differential equations) that have been a great help throughout my career.
The degree program I took included a fair amount of the math and science behind CS, including low level OS, compiler, and graphics programming. However, this meant less time was spent on more practical subjects like databases and the hop topics that employers wanted to see.
A Computer Science degree generally gives one the background needed to succeed in an entry-level position in a variety of programming areas: applications, systems, web, databases, and even embedded. This is handy when looking for work.
The CS profession is continually changing and forces you to always keep your skills up to date. Additionally, companies are much more willing to lay off a team at the end of a project than they once were; this means that you will have more career transitions in your life than some other fields may experience. Along with this uncertainly comes reasonable pay levels that will provide for a middle class life style in most areas of the US. |
