English Language and Literature, General:
I started out college majoring in English Education--I enjoyed the literature classes but after my first education class I decided that the public school system was a mess I didn't want to deal with, so I changed it to English Literature. In retrospect, I should have stayed with English Education. First, because English Literature is a really unmarketable degree--unless you want to be an editor (I don't), there is really no job for you after college that is relevant to your degree. Second, I could have done other things than teach in public schools with an Education degree--private schools, tutoring jobs, or Sylvan Learning Center. So in retrospect I wish I would have stayed with English Education. However, I enjoyed my major a lot. I love analyzing English Literature. I thought it was fun and interesting and I enjoyed discussing the text in class with others and writing papers advancing my own analytic points of view. After graduation I didn't work, I am staying home with my children so thankfully I didn't have to worry about finding a job with a degree that I really enjoyed as a major but didn't have any real employment prospects that interested me. |

Creative Writing:
The college major I choose, English Literature/Creative Writing, was a mistake. I embarked on this field of study believing that I could make a living with my pen (or keyboard). I wrote well, earned a 3.92 over all (and a 3.9 in my major), but sometimes working hard isn't all it takes. If I could go back, I would have majored in English/Literature through the Education Department. At least that way, I could have had a teaching certificate. Oh, I can substitute now and then, but I don't possess the credentials to teach full-time. Though I made a few buck from the stories I published, I still have not written the "great American novel." I value and appreciate what I learned in college, but I should have listened to my parents. The odds of paying the bills by wordsmithing are very slim. |

Creative Writing:
I chose this major with the confidence that I would write the "Great American Novel" and succeed. I published numerous short stories and wrote a novel; however, I made next to no money. My mistake was that I did not pursue a similar English degree through the College of Education. Had I done so, I could be a certified teacher and pay my bills. As it stands, I scrap to make ends meet. I value the education, I kick most people's butt's on Jeopardy, but can't make much of a living even though I graduated with an BA in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. My advice is to avoid the ego of majoring in Creative Writing. If you love Literature and the English Language, go through the Education Department. It's easier, and it is easier to get a post-grad degree as well. Plus, there more roads to follow if you do so. Besides, if you write well, then you don't need a piece of paper saying that you do so, other than your manuscripts. |
