English Language and Literature, General:
For those of you in doubt, yes, the study of English Language and Literature is an excellent preparation for a career and your entire life to come. If I had to choose over again, I would still choose this major in my undergraduate work. At age 58, I would re-enroll in an English Literature or Creative Writing Continuing Education program. It seems to me the one of the most fundamental tasks of any person is to know themselves, and master themselves. Broad and comprehensive reading enables you to learn about the classic personal, interpersonal and societal challenges Western Man faces eternally. The critical skills one acquires in this major are the skills of critical thinking, personal expression through writing, a deep understanding and empathy for the breadth of human experience. My work since my undergradaate days have included: Photography, Sales, teaching English as a Second Language, Social Work in a Homeless Teen Shelter, and Information Technology Operations. To prepare yourself for a specific career specialty early in life in self-defeating. Prepare broadly and in-depth for the unknown careers and life to come. |

English Language and Literature, General:
Deciding to major in English was the best decision I ever made. When I started as an undergrad, my major was Computer Science and I hated the classes, except for my one English class. I wrestled with the decision over a period of about a year before finally deciding to do what I loved, and I've never regretted it.
Majoring in English prepares you to do absolutely nothing in particular and anything you want. I decided while still in school that my education probably wouldn't control or even influence my career. That is, I didn't major in English so I could teach. I majored in English to have a more enjoyable life.
Since then, I've worked in radio for a while. I spent 14 years as a technical specialist in the aluminum industry. I've managed a small retail store, and now I run my own business. Who knows what I'll do tomorrow?
I've never gotten rich from any of this, and I never will. If money is a driving force in your life, majoring in English is a stupid decision. On the other hand, if you want to enjoy yourself a B.A. in English is never a bad choice. |
