Psychology, General:
A degree in psychology is a great degree to have, but few career opportunities are available to those who hold only a bachelors degree. Further study (at least a masters) is necessary in many cases, and is something that should be looked into before deciding on this as your major.
Psychology, however, is a great complement to other majors (either as a second major or as a minor). People looking into a major in the field of sociology, business management, economics, education, and many others can have a great advantage from the study of psychology. This isn't to say that there aren't many careers available in the psychology field - there are hundred upon hundreds of directions that this field can be taken!
If I had to do it all over again, I would without a doubt study in this field. |

Psychology, General:
What could be more fascinating than the human mind? Studying psychology gives you not only a basis for a career in research, education, or the mental health field, it also gives you valuable insight into how your own mind, and the minds of those around you, function.
Majoring in psychology can be as easy, or as complex, as you choose to make it. It is sometimes seen as a major for people who don't know what they want, or who aren't serious students, but that is not the case. Psychology students are sometimes teased about analyzing their friends' behavior or dreams, but there is far more to it than that. Psychology includes the study of personality, how people behave in groups and alone, how the brain receives, stores, interprets and applies information, as well as how people are motivated and influenced by their surroundings.
One of the best things about earning a degree in psychology is that it opens a range of career and graduate study opportunities. A graduate with a psychology degree proceed to graduate school to study social work, education, or many of the sub-specialties within psychology. The downside is that the jobs that specifically require a bachelor's degree in psychology are often low-paying, high-stress human services jobs. Many of the opportunities that follow from an undergraduate degree in psychology also require further education. |

Psychology, General:
I think Psychology is a very important and interesting major. There are many people that can be helped if you study psychology. However, I feel that jobs are limited and the pay is not that great, unless you continue into further education. I also suggest doing an internship. Book learning will teach you the basics about psych, but you don't grasp a real understanding until you see it and do some hands on things. It's amazing. I would recommend studying psych but only if your heart is really into helping people, or if you want to go on to grad school, etc. I would choose this major again, if I had it to do all over again. I love working with people and helping people. It's always something different every day. The pros are that it's very interesting and very rewarding. In this field you see so many different things and it's very eye opening. Also mental health is an area that needs much attention, so the more people working to better the mental health industry, the better. The cons are that the pay with just a 4 yr degree is not that great and jobs can be limited, based on location. |

Psychology, General:
If you are considering majoring in psychology, please understand that psychology is not synonymous with counseling/therapy/"crazy people"! There is so much more to psychology, so many interesting areas, such as social psychology, educational psychology, environmental psychology, cognitive psychology, and human factors psychology, just to name a few. |

Psychology, General:
Psychology is a fascinating major that allows you to explore a wide variety of topics, from experimental psychology focusing on lab rats, to memory, to social interactions between people and groups, to learning, to mental illness. As such, it provides a broad array of areas in which to explore more specific interests and a diverse range of options as far as career paths. Two people majoring in psychology may end up in wildly different occupations.
One drawback of this major is that there is very little you can do with a bachelor's degree. Thus, you should be prepared to do graduate work and obtain at least a master's degree, if not a doctorate. The pay for many master's level jobs isn't great, but school psychologists make a decent wage as a rule, and many do not have the doctorate.
Given the chance to do it over, I absolutely would. |

Clinical Psychology:
I remain very interested in how people tick, so this major would still interest me. However, people who go into clinical psych often underestimate the importance of good basic business skills and computer skills to do their work efficiently. Good typing skills are paramount these days, whether in public or private practice. There is a prodigious amount of paperwork involved, particularly if you work in a public sector job. An understanding and respect for the reality that any practice, public or private, is at heart a business is also key.
Next I would say that someone planning to major in clinical psychology needs to understand that a career in this field will not result in one fascinating case after another. The majority of your work will be with very average clients, with a fair percentage being folks with Axis II diagnoses, which are sometimes scary, and often not a lot of fun. That being said, there is still a sense of accomplishment in pursuing your craft in a professional and compassionate manner, and there are times when you will truly make a profound difference to someone. |
