Information Technology:
I would NOT recommend this major to people. This is a broad curriculum and I believe that the field will branch out over time, for example web development, networking, programming, technology management and you just don’t get specialized in any of that in this program. So, I guess the old saying here “jack of all trades, Master of nothing†applies here. But, in my area employers in the IT field are very particular about the skills and experience you have. I would recommend students to get a Business Administration degree and take lots of computer electives, I suggest this because I believe create many more opportunities in the long run. If I had it to do over again I would have gotten a bachelors degree in Business Administration, not Information Technology. The Pros of my degree are my technical skills learned, the cons are the lack of jobs available in my location. |

Computer Graphics:
Study this if it truly interests you, but I recommend doing your research on who will hire you before you embark on this degree. In order to become employed in the industries that Graphic Communications covers, you must have experience, and my degree did not provide adequate experience to be able to launch myself after graduation, thus, I am working as a caregiver to the disabled and paying off my student loans on a caregiver's income.
If I had it to do over again, I would have researched the potential careers that this degree would qualify me for up one side and down the other, like I am doing before taking a medical transcription course. What I would have found is that detail-orientedness and logic are a key skills that people in this field need to have, and I do not have them. The cons seem to be that positions now seem to be more scarce, and so much knowledge and experience is needed for them, that I would not know where to start to utilize my degree.
The pros would be that if you do have the knowledge and experience, you could make some good money. I feel that my degree was a little bit of this and a little bit of that, but never enough on one topic to make me an expert at anything. If I had it to do over again, I would have known about caregiving at the beginning, would not have gone to college yet, and would have undertaken an apprentice-ship type education, such as competency-based training for medical transcription. I would be further ahead not tied to student loan debt, and having many more years of work experience, the lack of, which is holding me back. There are, I am sure, those who took this degree and launched successfully, but it didn't work for me. |

Computer Science:
I took Computer Science at Purdue University in the mid nineties. The program focused on developing databases, algorithms, and general computing sciences. It was largely a mathematics curriculum. At the time, they didn't teach specific programming languages. That was for the School of Computer Technology. There was such a rivalry between the two schools that no credits transferred, even though both were Purdue schools.
If you want to learn to understand computers, computer sciences is probably the course you want. It lets you exercise your brain on theoretical computer problems. It helps you understand computers in general so you can face any problem regardless of language or implementation. I recommend it for a serious career in computing.
However, you will find yourself frustrated in the workplace by the thousands of computer technology types who learned programming from Lotus Notes or Microsoft Access. The working world is not looking for computer scientists. They are looking for managers and technologists. If you can "program" in Visual Basic, you're fine. If you just want a job, take Computer Technology.
I have been disappointed in the world's take on computer software and the development process. There was little focus on the development process during my time in college. As a result, they churned out heroic programming geeks who tended to like to sleep in the office and stare at the monitor for 24 hours a day. This is not a sustainable or predictable method for developing software. Ultimately, you may, as I did, find yourself frustrated by managers who's degrees are in industrial technology, developers who were former landscapers, colleagues who "sorta-kinda" learned to program, so they were drafted into the IT department. After all, it's only programming; how hard can it be?
It's hard to know what I would do if I had it to do over again. I may have chosen a different road altogether. I may have chosen graphical arts or creative writing. Don't make fun of those guys. Follow your passion. Forget about the money. Do something you love. You won't regret that. You might regret choosing a career simply for the money or the prestige. |
