I had an excellent time at Notre Dame and highly recommend it to everyone! You'll have a better time here if you come prepared to deal with winter at its best (lake effect snow, gray days), and the Midwest in general. Those can be downsides, but I loved making snowmen, snowangels, and especially playing snow-football. Aside from the weather, the school itself is excellent. There are a wide variety of courses, with the majority being in the College of Arts and Letters (Liberal Arts). You'll get a good grounding in the basics, even if you go off and do Engineering, as I did. Be prepared to deal with Catholics and priests - you'll do ok from any religion, and even if you're an openminded atheist, but not if you're millitantly anti-Catholic/Christian. If you're Catholic/Christian though, you can't ask for a better place to spend four years (and you don't have to be a "church-every-Sunday" type, either).
The best advice is to just visit. Take a tour (be nice to Annette in the Admissions Office), stay overnight with a student (bring a towel, cheap flip-flops for showering, and a travel alarm clock), walk around and talk to random students on the quad. Everyone is friendly, so get a map but don't hesitate to ask for help if you get lost. Have a look at the department you're interested in, and a couple others besides. Visit the Grotto. Eat in the Dining Halls (South is better). Imagine yourself living here, and if it feels like home, apply. |
