It really depends on what you plan to major in. Interview students and faculty in the department you'll be in, to see if it is a fit. Some departments are research oriented, and seem bothered by the presence of students, while others are academically rigorous and rewarding.
I would highly recommend this college to anyone interested in post-secondary education. It's a fun, diverse campus with plenty to do. The Greek life isn't very reputable, but with the friendliness of Iowa City it isn't a problem meeting people and finding friends. Solid academics throughout the college, many great professors, (of course a few bad ones). All around an excellent choice.
You need to be very disciplined to attend the University of Iowa. It is not the most difficult school by any stretch, but the amount of fun to be had here is VERY distracting. I would pick this school no matter what, partly because I grew up a huge Hawkeye fan, and secondly, it is just a great school and very entertaining. Pros- big party school, easy to meet many new people. Cons- smaller town, so may not be a lot of other things to do besides party. Most things people don't know about Iowa is that its a great time and there are tons of very good looking ladies here. (they mostly come from Chicago area)
The University of Iowa is a great school. There are lots of majors to choose from, the classes are generally good and the professors are available to students. It provides a good overall "college experience" in a top rank big 10 school.
Con: the weather, especially because the campus is divided in two by the Iowa River, and when you have to go back and forth across campus for classes--as many Health Sciences majors do, it is a real pain when it is raining!
There is lots to do in Iowa City--especially check out the lesser known sports, and the arts--they have a great Shakespeare festival and the ticket prices are reasonable.
When P.T. Barnum donated money to Tufts University, he did so on the condition that the school's mascot be named after his beloved elephant. The Tufts University mascot has been the "Jumbos" ever since.
