U of A is a fine state university with an abundance of scholarship opportunities. The university really shines through its honors program, which transforms the large, state school into a much smaller, intimate intellectual environment. Honors coursework is challenging and generally worthwhile, especially the amazing Honors Humanities Project (H2P).
One thing to know about the U of A, especially if you are considering graduate school in your future, is that many of the social science departments have quite weak core curriculums and do not offer many opportunities to pursue research. The projects I participated in where entirely based on my own motivation to ask faculty members about what possibilities existed, and the undergraduate research community that exists at some universities does not exist much at U of A outside the honors community.
Pros include great value for the cost, superb athletics, a strong honors community, and a great place to live. Cons include weak core curriculums in some social sciences, a very prominent Greek community, and the overbearing early fall and summer heat.
I would certainly choose this university again, though I would have pursued a different major (psychology is what I chose). |
