Smith is a wonderful place with highly involved professors, amazing opportunities for undergraduate research and a lively and caring social community. Don't be off-put by the idea of living in an all female environment - it's probably cleaner, safer, and more nurturing than the environment you could find in any co-ed school. Smith thrives on traditions ranging from the lively convocation events to Friday afternoon tea and each house has its own history filled with events held near and dear to the house. Although the academics are rigorous and the student activism and politics strong and energized, know what you believe, be open to new ideas, and learn to power of a good debate - especially if you lean more towards the center or right of the political spectrum. Smith will open doors, open your mind, and set you up in the type of bright, exciting community that makes college both academically rigorous and personally transformative. |

Smith is a fantastic college. I would choose to go to Smith again in a second. It's a hard school, but a great one, so if you're thinking of Smith, be prepared to work hard. Northampton, the town in which Smith is located, is small but full of character, so if you're looking for a big city experience, Smith may not be for you. And don't forget, it's a women's college, so if you're a boy or can' t live without them, look elsewhere. |

Smith is a wonderful college and I would recommend it to any young woman who is smart, driven, open-minded and not afraid to go to a single-sex school. The professors and academics are absolutely outstanding, and the student body is amazing. Plus the campus is beautiful and in a great area. Another one of Smith's greatest assets is that it has such a diverse student body -- not just by ethnicity, race, national origin and class but also by sexual orientation and gender identity. For that reason, Smith is definitely not for people who are narrow-minded or uncomfortable around people from different backgrounds. And no matter who you are or where you are from, if you go to Smith, you will definitely encounter people who are very, very different from you. The one drawback to Smith is that every once in a while you're going to encounter a student who is not ready or willing to be introduced to people from a different background or point of view - whether it's someone who identifies as transgender or someone who votes Republican - and that can create problems. Sometimes people go to Smith without knowing that it has a large queer population; other times very liberal people aren't prepared to meet Republicans. Anyone going to Smith, from any background (liberal or conservative, white or non-white, straight or queer, women or transgender FTMs...) needs to be prepared to embrace others who have vastly different views from them. It's a great school and if you are open-minded, bright and enthusiastic, you will definitely have a great experience. I would definitely go back there if I had to do it again. |
