History |

- Founded in 1867 as Western Maryland College
- Voluntary fraternal affiliation with the United
Methodist Church from 1868 until 1974. Ties were
cut over a court case in which Western Maryland and other religiously affiliated schools in Maryland were being challenged over
state funding received by the colleges becuase of their religious ties. The other schools retained their affiliations and won the
case.
- McDaniel College Budapest (formerly known as Western Maryland College Budapest) was established in collaboration with
College International Budapest and International Studies,
Inc. in 1994
- On January 11, 2002, the trustees
announced their unanimous decision to change the name of the college. On July 1,
2002, WMC officially became McDaniel College. The new name honors William Roberts
McDaniel, honoring his 65-year association with the school. The process did not include input from students, alumni, or
community leaders about whether or not a name change was actually necessary.
- A large number of alumni have cut ties with the institution in protest of the name change.
- The original name, Western Maryland College, derives from the Western Maryland
Railroad, who contributed a substantial amount to its founding.
