Despite Cal Poly SLO’s humble beginnings as an agricultural institution, it has risen to a nationally recognized and ranked school in the field of engineering. While US News and World Report has ranked Cal Poly in multiple categories for close to a decade, engineering and agriculture are hardly the only two programs of merit. Because of the college’s core philosophy of “Learn By Doing,†all majors have the inherent strength of being closely tied with the business world, with students frequently taking one or more internships. It is this philosophy as well as the school’s strong ties to all industries that have made it the most competitive of all CSUs.
Unlike all other Cal States, every single major at Cal Poly is considered to be impacted. Due to this, and also due to the small class size, classes are frequently overenrolled, with waiting lists for students to get in. Potential students must declare a major upon applying to the school—no undeclared majors are allowed. The difficulty of changing one’s major varies on the requirements of the college the student wishes to enter, and is dependent on the student’s GPA.
Cal Poly has a standard general education program, consisting of a series of classes in the humanities, sciences, and technology. The difference between Cal Poly and most other public institutions, however, is that only a small handful of classes are taught by graduate student teaching assistants. The bulk of a student’s education comes from directly from professors. Another plus is that the average general education class size is approximately 30 to 1, with only the general psychology class being taught as a large lecture of 500 students. Class sizes in a student’s major range from 4 to 50 students, averaging 25. These small classes promote strong relationships between students and professors, allowing students to build relationships over a student’s time at Cal Poly, relationships which culminate in the senior project, a graduation requirement where a student conducts research under the direct supervision of a faculty advisor. Throughout this process, students are encouraged to work with businesses in their field, and often senior projects lead students to a job with their partner company when they graduate.
Despite its academic focus, Cal Poly has a vibrant and active social culture, with a strong Greek scene and over 300 clubs offering everything from fencing to lumberjacking. Entering students are encouraged to attend Week Of Welcome, or WOW, which is one of the largest and strongest new student orientation programs in the country, incorporating approximately 500 trained volunteer student leaders. Highlights of the student social year are Homecoming in the Fall and an annual spring tradition dating back to 1904 known as Poly Royal, a week of events highlighting the campus’s academic and social offerings, culminating in an admitted students day, weekend fair, rodeo, and tractor pull. Finally, the Rose Float Club has worked in conjunction with Cal Poly Pomona each year since 1949 to construct an entry for the annual Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, California each New Year’s Day. Students run every aspect of the operation, from growing some of the flowers that cover the body of the float, to engineering the motors and hydraulics that drive the float and control its animation.
Cal Poly hosts seventeen varsity sports, ranging from football to Women’s’ Indoor Track (although the notable absence of an indoor track on or anywhere near the campus, coupled with the generally hospitable Central Coast weather, makes it apparent that this most recent addition was a political decision rather than one motivated by need.) These seventeen sports boast a total of 35 national championships, although none within the last decade. An additional sixteen club sports programs provide the student body a chance to enhance their college experience. The largest club sport, and one of the largest clubs on campus, the Wheelmen bicycling club boasts over 300 members.
Whether it’s building a mechanical mouse for the annual engineering “Robo-Rodentia†competition held during Poly Royal, spinning tunes at 2:00 AM at the campus radio station, or working at a co-op for a Fortune 500 company, Cal Poly students can be found practicing the school’s “Learn By Doing†philosophy daily and in every imaginable way, receiving practical, industry-related hands-on experience that makes them highly desirable employees. The administration continues to focus on expanding the campus research and exploration facilities, and just concluded a four-year centennial fundraising drive that netted the school well over a $265 million and leading the CSU system in alumni and parent giving as well as endowment. With such a dedication to providing students with a complete educational experience, Cal Poly is more than just a Best Buy school, it is a best choice school that has much more to offer than just academics. |
