Wayne State University, despite being in Detroit is not dangerous - as long as you stay on campus! The quality of instruction is average, most science instruction is done by teaching assistants (TAs) who are unmotivated and don't speak English well. The quality of the research is above average. Administration is really slow (ordering supplies, getting transcripts etc.). Overall, the quality of education is not great. Parking is expensive (about $2.00 a day) and in short supply. The campus is ultra-liberal and ultra politically-correct (don't be caught dead thinking freely around here, the thought police will round you up). Many departments hire professors who graduated from the same department so the quality of instructors is only average and the freshness of ideas is pretty stale. All in all, going to graduate school at Wayne State University will remain the worst mistake of my entire career. This is not a place you want to attend if you have ambition. Affirmative action seems to be heavily practiced here so this is a particularly bad place to be unless you like to see incompetence rewarded. We have a word for the way things are run around here. We call it "Wayne's world". Two of my friends were harassed for being Arab Muslims and the way their case was treated makes me feel sick every time I think about it. You will hear plenty of talk about "diversity" but at Wayne, that means "black". All other "diversity" need not apply. There are some centers of excellence like the Chemistry department and the Medical and Law schools. Still, remember that even if you are in a good department, your degree will still say "Wayne State" so caveat emptor.

Wayne State University is in the heart of Detroit. Not only do you access to University resources, the Detroit Public Library, and the Detroit Institute of the Arts are just across the street or a block from campus, respectively. I found this to greatly enhance the college experience. WSU has superior graduate and undergraduate theaters as well as a well respected medical school. This is most known as a commuter school with many students living off campus or just off campus. Typically, the only students who tend to receive university housing are students from foreign countries. This may have changed now. One negative is the school's university library. While nothing inherently wrong with it, it pales in comparison to the offerings available at the Detroit Public Library. However, it may be a minor complaint. If you are looking for an enriching university experience without attending a university where you will get lost at, give Waybe State a Try

Wayne State is rather expensive compared to other universities in the area. I would suggest that students get as many college credits as they can that will transfer to Wayne State, from a community college. Also, many courses are now taught by graduate students rather than professors, in order to save money. For what they are charging for tuition, they should have more professors teaching the courses. I must admit, though, that the campus has really transformed itself for the past five years. There are residence halls and restaurants, which help to make the university a "real" college campus, rather than a "drive-thru" school like it used to be.

I would reccomend this college to students interested in studying more than partying. There isn't much of a party scene here, and it is more conducive to learning and actually getting your degree as opposed to many of the so called party schools.
