UMass Lowell is a great school for both commuter and resident students. The majority of the students at UML work part time. The school offers both in class and great online classes. The school has a number of great programs including Engineering, Business and Music. There is great diversity in the campuses students, faculty and staff. One of the only complaints I have is there is limited parking and they will begin charging a monthly fee to park on campus...other than that I love it!
I would recommend this college, depending upon what your major is. It is definitely an engineering and biology school. I studied liberal arts and found the campus to be too spread out, with not enough parking (at the time). However, with the sciences and math, it is a different campus that seems all encompassed and this would have been a more attractive situation for me. I really wanted to live away at school, and this, for me was a commuter school. This school has top notch professors, tons of activities, and all in all is a great school. You may not know that there is a nuclear reactor on site.
