I will start off by pointing out what I consider to be the biggest drawback of attending Syracuse University, the cold and erratic weather. Its snowing/raining for the majority of the year, and during the winter it gets extremely windy and cold. However, that the reason we have invented winter jackets and scarfs. The university itself is beautiful and rich in history. Not only does it have an incredible history of talented athletic teams including an 11-time national champion lacrosse team, and an all star men's basketball team. The Carrier Dome is one of the most exciting arena's in all of sports, known as the Loud House, the Dome never disappoints. Syracuse also offers top notch academic opportunities including one of the best broadcasting schools in the country. With hundreds of possible majors available, there is something for every kind of student. And the nightlife is never dull, with dozens of fraternities and sororities on campus, there are always open parties available. Syracuse also offers convenient transportation everywhere on and off campus for free to all students, which is extremely useful in the cold winters. Housing and dining halls are of high quality and very rarely the cause of dissatisfaction. So if you can deal with cold weather I would recommend studying at Syracuse, who offers a generous amount of financial aid to cover their high tuition costs. |

When I visited the campus during my senior year of high school, I fell in love with it. The campus was large and beautiful, and the people seemed very friendly (plus they had a large assortment of vegetarian meals at the dining halls!. However, I knew that something was not quite right. After I made my decision of going there, and when I moved in for Fall semester, I knew that I stuck out worse than a sore thumb. I knew that the school was racially and ethnically diverse, but I did not do my research on how the students of different backgrounds did not mesh well in this school and I did not know that the people here had a more conservative outlook. Before I moved into my dorm, I made the mistake of dying my hair a bright purplish pink color, and it made my roommate and other students on campus have a weird reaction- some people thought that I was doing it for attention, while others thought I was a freak. The professors, however, loved it, especially since they could remember my name more easily since I stood out so much. I wanted to stay in the school so badly since I worked so hard to get into a somewhat "prestigious" college. However, over the course of the semesters, the rumors, torment, and death threats from other students just because I stood out a little too much for their liking started to affect my grades. My 4.0 went down to a 2.5. Also, it was very hard not to get into a drinking scene since everyone was doing it all week. Drinking and impressing friends was more important than going to classes and passing. I found it difficult to believe that a school would allow that especially since they put so much pressure on the students who applied. I also thought that many students were allowed in because their parents could afford the tuition without applying for financial aid, and not allowing their grades and other activities show their potential to the school.
I would only recommend this school to students who like to change themselves to fit into the norm, or to people who like to stay in the massive library all day so they could get their school work done and not get themselves involved with the other (hungover) students. |
