Pratt is a great school for artists who are motivated, creative self starters who find inspiration within themselves. Those with a strong desire to create will be right at home. The support system could be better (no faculty advisors), but there are some extremely talented artists employed as instructors. The facilities are good, and are always improving. A large advantage of life at Pratt is its spacious campus, with plenty of trees and sculpture.

The faculty and the progressive courses offered in architecture, social sciences, and fine arts were always stimulating and exciting at Pratt. Its biggest strength, however, was its location in New York. Only twenty minutes from Manhattan by subway, what you learn in the classroom is almost immediately expanded upon by exploring the city. At times this was difficult to balance; having been an Architecture major, the rigorous courses sometimes felt like they were grounding me on campus while my friends in the Fine Art's school were able to run around at this gallery and that party, etc. But the two can work well together, and I know that I'm better off having trained at Pratt than at another school outside of New York.

I attended Pratt over ten years ago, so I can't comment on the present condition of the school. When I went there things were pretty lame and Pratt was still getting by on its reputation from the 50s and 60s. There were many talented students, and many bored, uninterested, tenured professors. If you needed help finding a job and you weren't a graphic arts student, you were out of luck. Artists are, by nature, pretty self-centered, so the school was not a haven for upbeat, get-involved, school-spirit people. There were many who took their work seriously and many who were only there because a liberal arts college would have been too hard for them.
