For people considering coming here for an undergraduate degree, I would highly recommend it. While this campus is very large, it offers so much more than smaller campuses because of that. The class selection and on-campus facilities are plentiful. The university is in a small town, right next to the downtown area. The downtown life is wonderful; plenty of fun shops, stores, restaurants and meeting places. Although this university has tens of thousands of people, it becomes a very familiar, welcoming place after only a few months. This university is rather famous for being a party school, and that is definitely a big aspect of typical student life. So if you like to have fun, enjoy watching sports and meeting people, you'll love this university. |

My biggest piece of advice: take advantage of the variety. The sheer number of disparate educational opportunities available to a curious undergraduate is staggering. In four years, I took classes from the following departments (and yes, each of these is its own department): history; English; sociology; materials sciences; statistics; labor and industrial relations; philosophy; French; Spanish; astronomy; political science; landscape architecture; economics; art; religious studies; and science, technology, and society. As well as golf and tennis.
I came into undergrad expecting to major in history; I left for grad school with a double major in history and economics, and two minors to boot. Penn State -- more than either of the other two universities at which I've studied -- goes out of its way to allow students to experience a wide range of viewpoints and ideas. At many schools, registration in smaller departments is tightly controlled in order to guarantee space to that department's students. At Penn State, though, from Day 1, any student may register for nearly any course. One of the great benefits of Penn State's size is that there are literally hundreds upon hundreds of classes each semester; students can't help but find something they enjoy.
I'd also note that it wasn't until I went to another very large state university for graduate school that I began to appreciate the skill of Penn State's administration. From the registrar to the bursar to the student aid office, Penn State not only runs more smoothly than the 30,000-student university where I went to grad school, it also runs more smoothly than the 10,000-student university where I went to law school. For a school with a main-campus enrollment that tops 40,000, Penn State is uncannily well-run. |

The university is an incredible resource, if by only because of its size and, necessarily, influence later in life. There are so many Penn Staters (500,000) that you'd be hard pressed to not be able to find one working in your future field somewhere. My biggest problem here might be the quality of the students. It baffles me how idiotic/lazy/cheating oriented some students are here. I am also not a big advocate of people being able to transfer to University Park from satellite campuses and retaining their GPA. Classes are clearly more difficult at UP, yet somebody, who by entrance standards (GPA, SAT, ACT; University Park 3.51-3.90 University Park 1180-1340 University Park 26-30
All other campuses 2.87-3.35
All other campuses 960-1150 All other campuses 20-25) could have accomplished FAR less in getting to that point by taking easier classes could very well end up graduating with a higher class rank. I find that to be extremely unfair even though it does not directly hurt me in any way.
The faculty are nearly all excellent. Those who complain about their instructors have generally neve tried to engage themselves in any conversation with them. This especially applies in the fields of business and science, both EXTREMELY highly ranked departments of the university.
I've had extensive experience in many of the departments as I am double majoring and triple minoring.
Initially I only came here because I was fortunate enough to receive a full scholarship. As with many others, I've come to love it and call it home. I've developed some life-long friends here and have been involved in a TON of different organizations here. |

I would definitely recommend this college to any student planning on attending college, especially those who are currently in the "looking" process.
Penn State is a very diverse community, especially the main campus, in State College, PA. I really appreciated the variety of students, teachers/professors, and courses, having come from a very small rural high school. It was especially beneficial, since I am also a minority, to have the different cultures and races that I did not get to experience in my high school.
Penn State offered a huge selection of academic and social opportunities, and seemed not to cater merely to one sub-culture of student versus another. For example, whether you were a jock, a brain, a tech-ie, a gung-ho ROTC type, or a shy and quiet individual, there were activities, academic courses, and friends to be found. A well-rounded school offering something for everyone! |
