Make sure to go to the football games. They are a great event to go to with your friends from school and help you improve your school spirit. OSU is a very good football school so it is also fun since they win often. I would recommend it since it is cheap, popular and has a very diverse population. If I had to choose my college again I would still choose OSU. Some pros of OSU are you have a lot of people to make friends with and there are lots of activities to do around Columbus, but some cons might be that it is too large for some kids. Something you should know about OSU is Tommy's Pizza. It is the best food around and they focus on college kids, so if you want a popular, OSU crazed, pizza place, order Tommy's.

The good part of going to OSU is that they take their research role very seriously, so you are likely to have professors (in grad school) who are well known in your field. It's a great school for grad school for this reason. The main problem with OSU is its size. It takes five phone calls and a walk to Lincoln Tower to get anything accomplished. I also wouldn't send an 18 year old there, although I hear they are getting better at retaining undergrads.

The biggest advantage and the biggest disadvantage of OSU is that it's a big school. You have dozens of options for study and recreation (there are well over 100 clubs on campus), but it's easy to get lost without guidance. If you're not motivated to seek that guidance out, it's very easy to end up spending five or six years here. That said, OSU has a lot of school pride; it's a very positive environment. I would highly recommend their Honors classes for freshmen (especially the London Honors trip -- tons of fun!). Keep your eye on the (academic) prize and don't get sucked too deeply into the college culture of drinking and playing (and that applies to all schools).

It was too big. Only go here if you have a very outgoing personallity and can force yourself into things. Not working in area that I went to school for. Hard time finding work. I would choose to stay at home, not live on campus and go to a branch school for first two years.

I loved my school. The school had a wide variety of programs, really nice professors who are experts in their field, a vast array of things to do on the weekend, and pretty much anything you could think of. If I had to name a con, it would be that the size of the university is somewhat daunting and it can be hard to stand out. Try to get involved and into the Honor's program, and be diligent about keeping up with homework and classwork. The school is forgiving of low-performance, but students have a tendency to drop out when they realize that it's not a cake-walk like high school.

If you like an urban setting, with hundreds of thousands of people your age, you'll love OSU. OSU is its own island, because you need a car to get around Columbus (the king of urban sprawl) but the parking is terrible here. OSU is big and bureaucratic, but that makes self-selection more important to how far you get ahead. There are so many classes, majors and opportunities, in my five years here, I still don't know all the classes that would have been good for me. Which brings me to another point - the Gen Ed curriculum is ridiculously large, so expect to spend at least an extra quarter here compared to other schools like UCLA. If you're an Ohioan, you can't beat the price, and many of the programs are in the top ten in the country (eg PoliSci, Arabic, Finance). One of the problems with the academics is many of the best professors either don't teach undergraduates, or teach so scarcely that you won't be able to get the best recommendations for grad school. And of course, OSU is a party haven, with triple digits of kegs at some of the bigger parties, and smaller scale parties on every block. Columbus is a required stop on most musical tours, and every band imaginable comes to one of our venues here. I came to OSU because it was cheap but good. I took advantage of the suberb honors program to get a great education for peanuts. Cost of living is cheap too, and if you share an apartment, your rent and utilities combined can be less than $300 per month.

I attended The Ohio State University, and I can honestly say that I don't think I could have gone to a better place. Ohio State offers so many opportunities for their students and anything you want to learn about, you can find there. I changed my major a couple of times from journalism to photography to finance. Which was never a problem because in each major the school was well prepared to give me an excellent education in that field and excellent preparation for success in your career. Ohio State also fields many very competitive teams that are up there in the standings every year and there is no pride like Buckeye pride. The Buckeyes are the heart and soul of this university. What happens on the field directly affects the moods of students and faculty all around campus, which is good most of the time because they win most of the time. The only con I can think of about this place is that it can be hard to get into classes and take advantage of some things because there are just so many people here. I liked the fact of how many people were here though because you were always meeting new people. And one thing I would say to people coming here is to take advantage of the size and its opportunities and get out there and have fun and meet people.

A student should consider this college if they like a large college setting rather than a smaller, more private setting. The pros of going to this university is that it is such a large college with many amenities. There are many, many extra-circcicular activities to choose from as well. The college is a "small town within itself." You don't really need to leave the campus if you don't want to. The downside of attending the college is that is IS such a large college and you may not feel an intimacy as you would in a smaller college setting. The teachers are wonderful, however, and there is help available.

This large institution is a city by itself. The student body is very diverse. It has a great academic and athletic reputation. I would definitely attend OSU again. The classes may be a bit impersonal especially the large lecture undergrad courses; but it is easy to have someone lend you their notes if you miss class. Some dorms are a bit primitive, but there is ample off-campus housing. The university is located on the bus line so it is easy to get around the city without a car. Size also brings numerous arts and concerts to the area. It's an island of very cosmopolitan ideas in an ocean of midwestern conservatism. As a student, you will grow up fast and be prepared for the career jungle.

Advice for incomming students is to get envolved in the activitites. This is much easier if you live in the dorms as a freshman as these opportunities are more easily acessable. Participate in the traditions such as sitting in block O during football games, jumping in mirrior lake before the Michigan game, participating in Senior crawl. If I could do it again I would absolutly go to OSU again. The pros are the quality education you can get and the many different people you can meet. The cons are that you are one of thousands and you can get lost in it. Your education and experiences are what you make of them at OSU and it is your responsiblity no one is going to hold your hand. This is a place and time that will effet you the rest of your life. The connection among Buckeyes streches well beyond Columbus, Ohio, and will provide you with endless opportunities just by being an alumni.

Keep in mind that this campus is enormous. It's its own city, really. There are around 45,000 or 50,000 students here, so there are plenty of subcommunities and subcultures here. You may have to do some exploring before you find the right crowd for you, but you can certainly find it. OSU has a reputation as a party school, and that's certainly one kind of OSU experience that you can have. On the other hand, there are plenty of other things to do, too. I was never a big partier (though I went to a few blow-outs), and I had a great time and never felt out of place. OSU is as diverse academically as it is culturally and socially. Whatever you want to study (with the exception of photography and filmmaking), you can probably study it here. If, like me, you decided to go to college because you genuinely love to learn, there are tons of opportunities for you, in almost any field. Lots of people at OSU complain about huge cattle-car classes with TAs who don't care at all. There are plenty of courses like that, but with even a little creativity and adventurousness, you can have a very, very different classroom experience. I recommend taking honors courses and the small, specialty liberal arts classes whenever you can. Another great thing about OSU is that the scheduling and financial arrangements are designed to accommodate students in almost any economic situation. You can easily go to school one quarter, work the next, and come back later. The only cases where that's hard to do are in required sequences of classes, such as the 4-class Molecular Genetics series, or the 3 class honors intro analysis series. There are lots of interesting work study opportunities, with high pay rates.

Ohio State University, in Columbus, Ohio is enormous. It's really its own city, somewhat separate from Columbus. The size of the school can be a problem for some people, because it can make you feel lost in an enormous bureaucracy. It worked in my favor, though, because the honors program in my college alone was over five thousand people! I found a pretty big community of intellectually curious people from all over the world. If you want to skate by in easy classes with 700 students and almost no contact with the professor, you can do that. With only a little effort, though, you can take smaller, more challenging and involving classes. There are lots of opportunities here to learn, to have some very enriching experiences, to study abroad, and to have some great internships. A lot of students just go for the drinking and football, though, so you'll have to pick your classes and your living situation carefully, in order to make sure you're with other people who share your commitment (or lack thereof) to your schoolwork.
