My feelings about Furman are mixed. On the one hand, you won't find any school where the faculty is more focused on the students. I chose Furman because of the academics and I wan't disappointed in that regard. I recieved an excellent education, even though my field of study was in the sciences and this is a decidedly liberal arts school. The facilities in the science building ranged from barely average to pretty bad, but I know that the older buildings on campus, including the science building, are being completely overhauled. It is the campus life scene that causes my feelings to be mixed. Remember that this is still very much a Baptist school, so expect many if not most of the students to be uber-religious. One thing that really rubbed me the wrong way is that there is a four-year residency requirement, but the campus is also dry. So even after I was 21, I couldn't have a beer on the weekend or in the evening in my own apartment. Housing was always a big complaint. They nickel-and-dime you on expenses after you move out. The social scene is pretty lame and many people (I think around 40%) end up joining fraternities or sororities. Downtown Greenville is actually really nice. It's very laid back and a good place to grab a drink and a bite to eat. Anyway, I wouldn't necessarily discourage anyone from going to Furman because it does what an expensive private school is supposed to do -- educate you well. However, new students should know what to expect and be prepared. |
