It's a tough gig, man. When you're a waitron, everyone who walks into the business is your boss. You get screamed at by people who are in bad moods, you get reamed out by people who have OCD complexes about their food, and you frequently have to deal with unprofessionalism among your coworkers--busboys will steal tips, hostesses will pack a grudge and refuse to seat anyone in your section for days, and how much money you make often depends on how many of your customers got laid the night before.
But despite all that--I love working as a waitress. The job gives me a lot of opportunity to exercise my Zen-like self control and I have the best poker face inthe Tri-State area. If you can learn to "read" your customers when they walk in, you can help guide them towards the best evening they're going to have this year.
I love watching people and how they interact. I like watching the fights, disappointments, divorces and love stories that people act out in public places. If you are good at your job (and I am very, very good at mine) you can make more money than the President ... of the Hair Club for Men, anyway.
It's fast paced and yet sometimes boring. It's high stress and often very funny. You'll learn to cope with kindnesses and petty insults, jerks and saints, children and small animals (and sometimes there's very little difference between the two.)
If you think you can handle it, give it a try. Not everyone is up to the challenge. |

Being a server is a great learning experience. I have waitressed for almost 5 years now, and it has been very rewarding for me. When I was 16 yrs. old, I saved my tips and paid almost $3,000 for my first car. This job is good for people that are skilled in dealing with customers on a daily basis, and if you are not already skilled in this area, it is a great way to learn. This job also teaches time management and self confidence. Being told that you were a great server and receiving a tip to prove that point is a very rewarding experience. On the other hand though, as a server, you are open to criticism for every aspect of food service. A lot of customers are quick to jump in and think that it is your fault if the food is cold, not cooked right, takes too long, or any other problem that they might have. You are automatically responsible for every problem that might occur. If you are looking to become a server, you have to be ready to deal with some very very difficult people. |
