I love what I do as far as working with animals, helping them feel better by administering treatments or sometimes euthanizing them to spare their suffering (I don't enjoy the actual euthanasia, but sometimes they're so bad off it's good to help them go painlessly and quickly). However, in my experience, veterinarians aren't the most emotionally stable bunch of folks you've ever met, so if you can't deal with people barking orders or treating you like you have no clue what you're doing, this is NOT the career for you. If you can ignore that and concentrate on the animal, you're all good. You're not going to be paid an awful lot (usually somewhere between $10 and $15/hr...I once had a job as a tech that paid $6.50!), and the burn out rate is very high within the first five years of practice because for the most part this is very repetitive work. If you're squeamish, don't like handling poop, vomit, and urine, don't like people, and hate to be bitten and scratched, this isn't for you. There's a lot of death, there's a lot of crazy people out there doing awful things to their animals and whom don't really care if their pet is in pain, and you're going to see things you'll wish you didn't see (as far as nasty broken bones, maggots, cancers, etc.)...BUT, there is a lot of good in the profession as well: birthing, saving a patient, making a client feel better, finding a problem and fixing it...so if you're up for a challenge, go for it. But don't go in half assed, this profession takes a lot of guts and strength. |
