This is not a bad career. It is quite interesting in the beginning and with some effort can remain so, as there are different modes of transportation to learn and work.
If you are considering this career, you do not need a degree, but it can be helpful to help you get in the door. It is more important to be able to work with a wide variety of personalities and cultures and be able to negotiate. One of the key skills used is building relationships, which helps you accomplish your goals more easily.
I would recommend this career to someone who can work in a stressful environment and has a good sense of humor. On a day to day basis, it is not so stressful, but there are days that try the most seasoned veterans. Also, the industry is constantly evolving, but transportation is not going anywhere, so it is relatively stable. I would go into this career again.
Some of the negative aspects are that the job can become boring and that you may have to work holidays or odd shifts. Also, you work with many different types of people and have to get them all to work together, which can be challenging. Some of the best parts of the job are that you can really learn about transportation from many aspects and you have the opportunity to build relationships with people from different areas which is helpful for future career opportunities, or just pulling in favors.
I don't think this is a career that people dream about, but it is solid, challenging and engaging. It is no walk in the park, but you wouldn't have food on your table without it. |
