Teaching is a wonderful career. It is very rewarding and a great challenge. Many people have this idea that you can be a teacher, work a few months and be off all summer. Sounds great. But GOOD teachers work 10-15 hours a day. After school events, planning, dealing with student issues, continue learning, as well as, grading papers and looking for new resources is more than a full time job. A teacher works weekends, holidays, and yes, all summer long. It is a very tough job for GOOD teachers, but worth every second, dispite the pay. If you think you can work a few months and have the summers off then you are looking into the wrong career. |

In education, teachers are those who teach students or from whom pupils learn, often in a school. The objective is typically a course of study, lesson plan, or a practical skill, including learning and thinking skills. The different ways to teach are often referred to as the teacher's pedagogy. When deciding what teaching method to use, a teacher will need to consider students' background knowledge, environment, and their learning goals as well as standardized curricula as determined by the relevant authority. The teacher should also be able to deal with students with different abilities and should also be able to deal with learning disabilities. Many times, teachers will have to do their job outside of the classroom by accompanying students on field trips. They also supervise study halls, help with the organization of school functions, and serve as supervisors for extracurricular activities. So as you can see it is a very varied job, highly rewarding if you are a peoples person. As an ESL teacher I have managed to see the world. The only cons I can think of is perhaps that it isn't one of the highest paid occupations out there but it surely is the most rewarding one by far! If you are a dedicated teacher it can be quite time consuming, so it has to be a calling more than anything else. |

Being a teacher is, like most other, a job with higs and lows, difference being that in being a teacher the highs are slightly higher and the lows are usually quite lower.
For one thing, the highs are indeed worthwhile. Being a teacher is one of the few things left in the world people still feel glad doing. Recognition, respect, rapport, interaction, you still get all these being a teacher.
There are, however, some drawbacks in being a teacher. It is, for instance, a job that will never fulfill you financially. You will probably never get your condo in Boca by teaching Primary School.
All considered, my advice for you is: take it. Teaching is cool, interesting, heartening, life-chaging. If you like doing it, and if you like it only. That is my case, so yes, I would do it again. Without a blink.
And the one thing I should tell people is, irregardless of the area where you work, teaching is a lot of hard work. Always. All the time. You'll always be taking work home. Always. Inevitably. |

I am a private violin teacher. I started out following in my family business as a public school teacher, but discovered when I did my student teaching that running a school program is quite complex and not at all what I wanted to do with my life. Too many political maneuvers required, too much non musical stuff to worry about, etc. So I took up teaching private lessons while in graduate school for performance, and I really like it. I like being flexible if I want to take a vacation. I like working with students individually and often getting to know their families if they come to my house. The downsides are poor pay and benefits, and probably bad hours, since you have to work when kids aren't in school and parents can bring them to lessons, usually from 3-9 pm. I get paid $30-$35 an hour, but I can only work 5-6 hours a day or so, max. And I'm self-employed, so have to pay higher taxes and get no benefits. For the first 4 years I did this it was a struggle. I was performing with every orchestra I could find and teaching some school classes as well to make ends meet, even for my little one room apartment. As I have now married a college professor, life is a bit easier. I can do what I love and not worry about the money. But not everyone has this luxury. There are those who make it work, though. I recommend getting pedagogy training, and if you want to work full time, join, or create a true professional studio with many many students and policies about timely payment and paying in the case of forgetting or missing a lesson. Things like that are what I didn't think about up front but learned rapidly that making a viable business is about more than just teaching the violin. |
