I have worked as a grant writer for non-profit social services agencies and as a domestic violence victim advocate. Currently I am the executive director of a national-level non-profit organization.
When working in the social science field, especially when working with clients who are members of society facing special challenges, it pays off to have education with a broad background. In social services, you should have at least 2 courses in each of these: public administration, psychology, personal finance, human growth and development or adulthood and aging, criminal justice, and a good higher level course in MS Word and Excel. If you plan to be in management, take at least one or two public speaking courses as well as a good technical writing course. Being able to understand the problems of your clients is essential for beginning positions, but being able to talk about and display statistics for government agencies and funders is essential for higher level positions. |
