I worked for nine years as phone crisis worker in an access center. At the time, my facility was a 24 hour crisis intervention and provided access to mental health services. That meant anyone who felt suicidal or in an emotional crisis could come in to seek help. They could be placed in a variety of settings including a hospital, residential home, or in one of the two emergency beds we had in our building. My job was to work the phone crisis line and to look after the people placed in our beds. That included administering medications to them. I loved my job. When someone called in with a problem and felt better after talking to me, I felt a real sense of accomplishment. If a person was discharged from one of our beds in better shape than when they came in, I felt like I was really contributing. I would recommend a social services job to anyone. What often destroys good jobs is office politics. Toward the end of my job, another staff made it her mission to give me a hard time and management did little about it. That is one of the pitfalls of working a job that does not have union protection. While this situation was ongoing, there were rumors that the company I worked with was going to lose the contract to run the crisis center to another company. The staff worked hard but the contract was lost anyway due to political situation involving our CEO. I would suggest that before you get a job of any kind, find out what you can about the company and whether working there is a friendly job environ and if there is a union that will protect worker rights.

This career can be rewarding at times if you feel you have made a difference in the client's life. The problem is that being exposed to people's problems and tragedies day in and day out can test your obejectivity. It is difficult to maintain your boundaries and not get involved emotionally. You have to be highly organized to be a case manager and be able to complete tasks quickly regardless of interruptions.

Working in human services can be a very rewarding career. You are often given the chance to impact people's lives in a positive way and help them when they are in need. However, due to the non-profit nature of most of these positions, pay is often lower than positions with comparable responsibility in other sectors. This is an excellent career for people looking to move forward into social work or other human services careers. When working in social services, it is important to balance sensitivity and compassion with a thick skin. Often you will deal with people under a great deal of stress, and it is important not to take their reactions or behaviors personally. One difficulty with a career in this field is that much of the funding for individual programs depends on state or federal budgets, so pay raises are infrequent and sometimes programs are reduced or eliminated due to lack of money, which can be frustrating. If I had it to do over again, I would certainly choose a career as an assistant in the social services field. It gave me valuable insight into not just that industry, but also into the inner workings of government bureaucracy, which has informed many of my opinions and decisions.
