Journalism is a dream career for everyone who is self-driven and flourishes working under deadlines.
A journalist needs to be literate and to be able to concentrate on writing while the clock is ticking. Passion for and thorough knowledge of the chosen filed - be it foreign affairs or fashion – is a must. So is insatiable curiosity and professional integrity. Another requirement is a good social network, which means hanging out with people outside your profession and – just as importantly – with your colleagues.
The biggest advantage of being a journalist is the feeling of freedom. There are no strict 9 to 5 hours. Once you achieve a certain status in the profession, you are pretty much left to your own devices, without anyone looking over your shoulder and breathing down your neck.
Then, another great advantage is that you, almost willy-nilly, get to use your brain. Ah, the hours you spend sweating to find the right phrase without sliding into a cliché! And here is the best of all: you get to influence, even though perhaps in the slightest degree, the opinions of others.
As to disadvantages – I do not know of any. Some will say journalism is too stressful. Some will say all those topsy-turvy working hours and all that socialising affects adversely your family life and your health. (After all, the socialising is usually conducted over a glass of something strong.)
But as for me, I heartily agree with what someone said years ago: all the downfalls notwithstanding, being a journalist is so much better than actually having to work. |
