I ended up as a public relations manager, after starting out in radio and television production. I decided to make this change because it was getting impossible to keep up with all of the changes in the broadcasting field as more and more operations became computerized or automated and "everyone" felt they were an expert because they had a video camera at home and used it occasionally. It was very easy for me to transition to public relations, since it is closely related to my prior career.
Public relations is the art and craft of putting a positive spin on events and/or being the main person in representing a product or service to the public. Individuals entering this field need to be assertive, outgoing and extraverted. Most of all, they need to enjoy people! They also need to have a tough skin. If you aren't this type of person and can't hack the pressure, find another career!
However, it is exciting to be in the forefront when you're acting in the role of a public relations professional. So if you like people and have a way with words, this is a great career path for you. It's a lot of fun. BUT ... the pay is not that great unless you're in a large corporate environment and the hours can be long and irregular. Plus, you are at risk for layoff, since the PR office is often the first to be slashed during cutbacks.
If you go into public relations, the best professional activity you can do is NETWORK with others in your field. You are going to need a lot of friends if you're ever in a tight spot and trying to maneuver your way out of it with those skillful words you'll speak or write!
Go into PR with your eyes open. And have fun! |
