i work as a 911 dispatcher, and in my opinion it is a very exciting career. i dipatch polce and fire, answer 911 phone calls, and answer radio traffic for the entire county. i recommend this career to anyone who has patience and would love the feeling of helping other people. while you are appreciated most of the time you do get the occasional call where you cannot seem to do anything to help the caller (from the callers prespective). the highs are highs and the lows are lows. meaning, not every evening is as eventful as the previous.
In order to enjoy this career you must be flexible, and quick thinking. You must enjoy dealing with different situations constantly, and thinking on your feet. You must also be willing to do shift work, long shifts etc.
Being a 9-1-1 emergency services dispatcher is very rewarding. It is a fast paced job which demands attention to detail and the ability to multi-task. Being able to help someone in need is a tremendous feeling. The main drawbacks to this job are: 1) dealing with losing a life, 2) work hours (emergency services is open 24/7 365 days a year), and 3) low pay for the stress. I loved this job and only left for better hours and higher pay to better support my family. I still do dispatching on a reserve status meaning I get in a minimum of 8 hours per month. I would definitely suggest this job to others, though some people are just not cut out for it.
