  I retired from probation in 11/2015, twenty years of service. I worked everything from Regular to Specialized Caseloads. My last 12 years were spent working Specialized Caseloads. First off, every department will overload you on cases, so that you cannot do the job properly. They will assign you 200-300 cases, and act like you have 75 cases & audit the hell out of you. Second the pay sucks if you work your ass off you may get a 3% raise, if you are lazy and don't work hard except for kissing the bosses ass, you get a 3% raise like everyone else. Third management will throw you under the bus every chance they get, to look good or to save their own ass. Fourth your not appreciated for the work you do, your treated like a paid whore. Five, management holds themselves to low standard & everybody else to impossible standards. I will give example our department was rated by CJAD as a 98 on a 100% scale one year. Our Director berated, cussed and yelled at us for 90 minutes ;because, we didn't do a 100 (nobody gets a 100%). This same Director is being sued by a female officer for sexual harassment, the Judges over him look the other way.

  The advice I have for anyone who are considering this career is that you have a desire to help people do better in life. I would recommend this career to others who can handle the stress that comes behind the work and have once again a desire to help people do better in life. If I had to do this all over again, yes I would still choose this career. This is not difficult. I complete self study courses, request extra training and work very hard. I enjoy this career.

  I really enjoy the work that I do as a Youth Care Specialist/Correction Officer. the best advice to give would be to not have high ecpectations. I want to help young women and men become better people, but in reality most of them take a while to figure things out on their own. I would definatly recommend this to people who love being around youth and want to teach them skills and rules that they need to follow to get through life. I would definately choose to do what I do if I had to do it over. The great things about it are that I can help teens and build mentor relationships with them. The money is not bad either, although it could always be better. I really don't care for the hours though. Another bad thing is that many of the teens are incorigable and hard to deal with at times, it is just frustrating sometimes. Most people think that being a correction officer requires you to lock people in a cell a day. However, they rarely spend half the day locked up. They get to play games, watch TV, and do recreational activities. Being a correction officer is a great stepping stone if you're looking to go into the law enforcment field.
