My career specialty was Loss Prevention Investigator in the Retail Industry. I enjoyed my job as I worked in the theme park field. The theme park industry was able to give me flexible hours to work because the park was open 7 days a week from morning to evening. I could make my schedule around what I needed to do in my personal life. However this job is not for everyone one.
My job consisted of apprehending and prosecuting shoplifters and employees. Conducting investigations on employees was more indepth. This may require camera surveillance, foot surveillance, or paper trails. Employee theft is the number one cause of company shrinkage accounting for over 85%. Shoplifting accounts for less than 12%. Dealing with employees and with shoplifters are two totally different jobs and they require two totally different types of skills. Some skills do overlay and it always helps to have both skills mastered. My entry level positions begin as a shoplifting agent. During this job, the agent will either monitor the cameras or walk the floor trying to locate suspect shoplifters. There are certain requirements that must be met in order to detain a customer for shoplifting and a good eye, patience, memory, and attention to detail are all very important skills. This job can be very exciting when detaining a shoplifter. Most agents say they experience an adrenalin rush. However, depending on the retail location, some stores may catch only a few shoplifters a month where others can catch a few in a day, so some locations may tend to be a little boring. Being a shoplifting agent helps to prepare you for employee investigations as you learn to watch people and their behaviors. You then apply those skills to watching employees. Once a shoplifting agent has identified a bad employee, they are usually ready to begin training as in internal investigator.
An internal investigator requires great mental strength. This investigator must be able to get inside the head of the suspect in order to determine how the suspect is committing the crimes and what to say to make the suspect confess. Conducting employee investigations may require inside intelligence, camera surveillance, or paper trails. All this detective work must be completed before the real work can begin: the employee interview. An internal investigators job is to obtain a confession from the employee that can lead to prosecution if the company so chooses so. The investigator, even though he is not a police officer, must follow certain guidelines to ensure a confession obtained is admissible in court. The second job of an investigator is to find out the details that are able to be investigated through regular means or was just not discovered during the investigation. In other words, why did the employee commit the crime; was there something the company could have done to prevent this crime and other crimes in the future? Why was the employee able to commit this crime for so long undetected, what security features did not work or what needs to be added? Who else was involved in this crime or involved in their own crimes similar to the suspects? These questions help you to determine other employees involved, weaknesses in the security, and problems in the company.
This career can be good for a man or a woman. Some aspects of the job may require physical strength, in the event a suspect must be physically detained, but it is not always necessary. Many women are very good at this job because people do not expect women to be in this role, therefore women are more able to conduct close surveillance and to just obtain information. Women can use this stereotype to their advantage. Men have a harder time in investigations because it is more difficult for them to appear compassionate. This can make it difficult in certain interviews.
Choosing the right retail industry type and location can help you create the right work environment for you. I originally began my career path as an accountant and stumbled upon this field in the course of my duties. I learned more and more about the field and became more interested in catching those people who thought they were smart enough to get away with a crime. I have thoroughly enjoyed my career in loss prevention as it provides new and unique experiences everyday. |
