A lot of people think working with children is fun. Well, these people have never worked with kids before! It is very rewarding because you are educating, caring, and earning the trust of other humanbeings. However, it is VERY stressful physically, mentally, and emotionally. You have to be very good at manipulation. If you lose control of one child the entire class becomes flustered. Remember that you are caring for someone's CHILD, not their financial obligations, their food, home, ect. They are trusting you with their KIDS so mistakes are not possible. You must know ways to prevent children from becoming disruptive or hurting eachother/themselves (this is A LOT harder than it sounds). The pay is crap and no one respects your position at all ("oh you play with kids all day? How fun!"). Also keep in mind that most child care institutions do not allow you to raise your voice or put the kids in time out. This is very hard when kids will go as far as opening a door and running out of the class or refusing to get on the bus or back in line when on a field trip or outside. Also, education only gets you so far. Experience is a must, people who get a 4 year degree and expect it to be easier for them... well good luck with that. I got a position as a teacher (I'm in college, but I also have 4 years experience) and I spent most of my time taking over for the college grads who could not control their classroom for the first few months. |

Being a preschool teacher is a fun and rewarding career. In many cases you are the first contact a child has with education, and you can foster a love of learning in a child and help them develop skills they will need for preschool. It is also fun to get to know the kids on personal level. They become very attached to you and you will become very attached to them. Also, it is definitely not a boring job, you are free to be creative and no two days are ever alike. However, I do not think it is for everyone. It is very taxing physically, because you are on your feet all day, and emotionally, or mentally, because you have to be able to control your class and with 3 and 4 years it is a constant battle. You need to be very patient, you need to know how to be firm yet kind, and you need to be able to think on your feet and quickly respond to a situation. It also, helps if you are creative. You need to be able to keep kids, entertained and busy at all times, if they lose focus, you lose control. Another reason why this career might not be for everyone is because you have little adult contact. I think the main thing people need to know about this career is that it is not as easy as people think it is to control a room full of small children and managed to teach them and nuture thier abilities at the same time. I think it is a great job, and would highly recommend it as long as people know all the pros and cons. I think a big problem is when people become preschool teachers, they think it will be a cake walk, and they really need to be prepared for worse case scenarios. If I had to do it over again, I would not choose this career. I love it, and I love the children, but the lack of adult contact is a major downside for me. It is not mentally challenging and sometimes I feel like I am digressing because all I do is talk to three year olds all day. I am currently finishing my degree so that I can teach high school. I love education, but I want to be able to teach at a higher level. It is a great career, but I really don't think it right for everyone. |

I love teaching and kids thats why I chose this field. Teaching is very stressful in a way that you are being depended upon for the childrens growth. This is my first ever career and it was hard for me at the start because I had a lot of adjuments and learnings to do. My advice for people considering this career is that you have to have love for teaching and kids. Kids are kids, they have tantrums, needs and wants and if you are considering this job, you should be able to do and offer all that and more. Do alot of research about the field and think about the pros and cons several times. I would recommend this career to people who has dedication, patience, reliable, credibility and love for children. Like any other job, Pre-school teaching has pros and cons. I would say there are alot more pros than cons on this career. Good things about it is that the pay is not bad, you will enjoy doing the job because the kids are so much fun to deal with, if you have kids, you will be able to be with them given youre teaching the same age levels as your children. and alot more positive things The cons would be dealing with difficult parents, yes, sometimes parents are more difficult to deal with than the kids. Another not so nice about it is when you have a very difficult child but then again, if you really love what you are doing, this will be easy to deal with. |
