I'm an assistant to math teachers at a college. I help college students with basic math skills. These skills are usually skills that should have been learned in elementary but somehow the student didn't. The students range from just out of high school to parents to people who want to go back to school after being out for so long but need basic math skills to go to higher levels of math. I enjoy my job and helping people to be patient. You learn how to be understanding of other's feeling and how not to belittle someone just because something seems easy. This would be a good job for any who is patient and wants to truly help others learn.

I'm currently an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher, and I've had a mix of positive and negative experiences in this position. This is a good career for someone who wants to gain experience teaching and who has the patience to work with students. It's a low-paying job, and the repetitive nature of the lessons can be boring for a teacher who wants to really interact with the students and see a lot of positive results. This job is usually as good as the students are, so it can be quite fulfilling when the students are active participants in the lessons and bring their own energy to the subject. Usually adult classes have the best students, though the language skills are more difficult for them to pick up. In classes of younger students there are often discipline problems that can bog down the entire class, and I spend a lot of time dealing with the "trouble" students rather than being able to focus my energy on the talented well-behaved students. Any kind of teaching is a balancing act, and it really takes a personality that can persistently focus on the positive parts of the job, and look at the big picture.

I am an educational coordinator and instructor at a specialty post-secondary institution.

Career schools offer each individual involved in the program the opportunity to change people's lives. My career allows me to work with each student individually, to work with their strengths and address their weaknesses in a unique way which is beneficial to the student and very rewarding to me.

Every day provides a different challenge, so boredom in the workplace is non-existent.

Time management is critical to success in this field, as are recognizing my own strengths and weaknesses; the ability to work with different social, educational, and economic demographics; the ability to listen; process information; and convey information.

The hours are brutal - usually 50-60 hours a week and a lot of weekends. The pay is adequate but not exceptional.

I would recommend this career for anyone who is self-motivated, who loves working with diversified groups of people, who is a team-player, and who has a passion for helping others.

Post-secondary education is mired in beauracracy, so patience is a must in this career field.
