A police officer's career should not be entered into lightly. While it can be very rewarding, it is also very demanding. The pay is never going to make you rich but there is not likely going to be a decrease in demand for your presence either.
Before applying to a particular department, one should look into both the written and unwritten policies. Talking to men and women in the field is a good way to gauge the satisfaction level of the department personnel. Ask questions about case loads, demand for overtime, officer safety, officer turnover, promotions, vacation time, time in court, training availability, the age of safety equipment (vests, etc.)and whether or not management is open to suggestions.
Satisfaction on this job can be directly linked to the factors motivating your interest in it. If a person gets into this line of work because of how it looks on television, they will be disappointed. There are opportunities to be involved in many things but the majority of your time is spent maintaining a preventitive presence and responding to the everyday needs of people in your community. When you are involved in high profile events, you are most likely on the outside edges. It takes a great deal of patience, hard work and even some luck to make it to detective or other specific assignments.
police work can also be frustrating. You are not the dispenser of justice! At best you can lessen the burden of the people in your community by preventing some of the crime that would have occurred had you not been a strong presence. After a crime occurs, you become a collector of the facts. Justice is for prosecuters and juries. Often, cases are decided or dismissed without your knowledge. Sometimes they are delayed for years on end. Seeking immediate justice will only lead to destructive behavior on your part. Sometimes the best you can do is comfort the people that have been affected and go home to your family.
Whatever you do, you have to leave it at work. Police officers have traditionally had high divorce and infidelity rates. Spouses who are not in this line of work most often can not relate to the stress that you can be under or the things you may experience. This profession can also be very demanding of your time and that is something that your family could suffer from if you do not find a way to prioritize. |
