My advice for those considering a career as a Police Detective is to be absolutely honest with yourself regarding the sacrifice involved with this type of service. I heartily recommend that young people not choosing military service should serve their community, for at least three years, as a police patrol officer, corrections officer, emt paramedic, or even as a firefighter for those less motivated. I am biased toward police work as that is my avocation and despite the sacrifice involved I would still choose this career. The cons include, but are not limited to: long hours often with unpaid overtime, extreme demands on judgement and maturity, exposure to physical hazards on duty and during training, high responsibility with extreme accountability, horribly biased public scrutiny, remarkably low professional support, risk of errors being viewed as criminal and incredible civil liability. The pros include: worldwide fraternity, esprit de corps, sharp clothes, fast car. Be advised that the average police academy is at least twice as long as military boot camp and most police instructors are former military. The procedures and equipment were developed at great cost in lives, dollars, and years. A police detective always serves first in uniformed patrol. Detectives normally work in less extreme environments than patrol, but the physical risk is as great. Detectives normally trade regular schedules for interminable "on-call" and rarely are they "off-duty". If you have read this far know sincerly that there is no more satisfying, challenging, exciting, worthwhile calling than being a police detective. Since I could go on ad infinitum, allow me to stop here and say thank you for the opportunity to share my views. |
